I would disagree; I encounter plenty of grateful users, but they are here only for answers, not social stuff. They get their answer, thank you, and beat it. At that point, they don't even know about the rep system.
Fortunately for us, our reward is not in rep points. The knowledge that tens of thousands of users around the world are enjoying Windows thanks to our help is enough for me.
That having been said, logging in and noticing a new badge is also pretty satisfying.

Allow me to tell you why I am doing this. I agree with Johnathan, in that it is much more than the rep points. In my particular situation, beginning in July of this year, with the preorder for Window 7, I decided to upgrade. I bought the OS, waited for it to arrive, but when it did, I had second thoughts about installing. What if I have a problem? Do I really want to fix something that is not broken? Well, I almost decided not to install. But, I was already a member of Vista Forum, so I decided to come here and ask. Everyone, was very helpful, they answered all my questions; but two individuals in particular, Zigag and Zrtom, were extremely helpful; answering my many questions. In fact I thought that Zrtom was actually with me while I was installing.

I felt so proud and satisfied after that installation, that I wanted to give others the same feeling and that is why I am here.

But, that being said, at least 50% of the posters are hit and run, but at least 20% do come back and give a thankyou and that makes me feel great.

Another benefit is that the best way to learn is to teach.

I help out because I have received a lot of help and info, not just here but in many places on the net and I want to contribute where I can and give something back. Of course, it's a nice feeling to help people, but I also learn a lot in the process from reading many of the posts here and that ongoing process of learning and the increase in my knowledge is a real benefit to me as well.

I agree. I don't have any problem with helping hit and runners. It's helping all the same.

Guess that means I have to wait a LONG time to get my Power User badge, as most of the people I've got Reputation off are one/two thread wonders and are probably not gonna get rep for a thread where they're asking for assistance. That rule is a bit..... tight........ Totally get what it's for, but it's tight on us genuine users.
