My computer started producing a two-tone sound, almost like a Windows sound of some type AND the mouse pointer/mouse freezes.

Both a soft and a hard boot produce the same results

Windows restore unsuccessful.

Installed Windows 7 disk, and tried booting with the F8 key. Windows repair and restore unsuccessful.

I now believe that I may have a hardware issue like a bad mouse or some other device. I am planning on removing components one at a time to see if the two-tone thingy stops.

I would be gratefull for anyother suggestions. Normally, my computer runs like a clock. I have not installed any new software?

Possible corrupt mouse driver. Do you have a different mouse to try? If you use a wireless mouse look at the USB drivers.

The mouse pointer freezes, The computer itself probabbly does not.
I also here the double tone when the mouse freezes as if its getting some
kind of input signal?

Does this help?

Was it booting up or was the computer already running? I wanted to ask, because I'm wondering if the tones are POST beeps or not, which can indicate hardware failure or a loose connection.

I understand, They are NOT POST beeps, the computer was already running fine.
I actually think this is a mouse or mouse driver problem?

Any thoughts?

You might have:

  • A dodgy USB socket (try a different one)
  • A damaged cable on your mouse
  • Dying electronics in the mouse itself

Very good procedure but not worth the risk to me! I will first try a new mouse and/or mouse driver.

Final Resolution

I wanted to post my final resolution so others may learn from my experience.
First, Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Last evening I tried moving the mouse USB plug to another USB port, no help
I tried two different mice, and their associated software drivers/installation disks, no help

I could not resolve this issue with System Restore or Windows Repair. My mouse pointer remained
frozen at the center of the screen. I have an external Hard Drive, so I moved as much as I could
to that drive, pictures, documents, other nice to keep stuff...... AND....... Out came my original
Windows 7 Professional installation disk.

Yes, I reformatted and reinstalled the operating system. Now my system has three monitors, a 22" widescreen in the center, and two 20" square monitors on each side, all on one stand. I was using a software program from Cinemassive which allowed one desktop background to be displayed across all three screens proportionately. I COULD NOT FIND THE SERIAL NUMBER.

Now I have a really nice system which I will eventually fix/recover, I built this system myself after the
movie 2001 space oddesey. My computers name is HAL, A HAL-9000.

Yes, I am slightly ill. 24 GB DDR3 RAM, i7 CPU, Dual Video cards, Hard Drives, and Power Supplies.
My case came from Mountain Mods.

Sometimes you can get the vendor to look up the Product Key using your bank information. Worth a try.

Hopefully you hewed pretty closely to the same steps as for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which assures a perfect reinstall as long as you stick with the tools and methods given.

Enjoy Win7.

Thank You Sir
