Reset my Icons!

Somehow all of the Icons in my desktop and at the bottom of my screen turned into the NOTEPAD icon today. I was on the phone almost all day and in Live Chat with both my internet provider and the maker of my laptop. Everything they suggested doing didnt work. They did tell me tho that it didnt sound to them like a virus. When I open my files/icons, the Notepad page comes up and there is a lot of "mumble jumble" type on there and that is it.
Any suggestions please?

Run a full anti virus scan
Download and scan with malwarebytes.

If clean, this may work

Dont skip the scan portion, be sure or problems can get worse.
