resize partition from driver d to c

Hi All,

The subject says it all - does anyone know how to resize partition c as I have not much space left in it and partition d has more space that I hardly use.

Partition c has windows 7 installed in it. how do I make this partition bigger by transfering some space from partition d to partition c?

Is there any reliable free software that I can use to do this? is this possbile or it is risky?

I use Partition Wizard and it is free.
Magic Server Partition Manager Software - Resize partition for Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2000.

I would also make a backup image before doing it. I use

Of course, you will need to move some stuff out of C: to D: before you do anything else.

A good candidate for moving out is often

C:\User\Downloads

Also, run a diskcleanup and defragment before you do anything else;

Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Cleanup

Why would he have to move stuff out of C: ? He is expanding C: not shrinking it.

He might realize that moving the UserData to another drive frees up so much room that he doesn't need to extend the partition anymore.

That may be true but that opens a whole different problem as what can be moved. Could cause more problems then it is worth.

If he cleans up on C: he might not need to do anything else!

Resizing partitions is always a risk.

Apparently a lot of people find it difficult to use. Most home users wont try this anyway.

I have read that it has some limitations and I have used Partition Magic in the past and it has always been easy and safe to use so that is why I recommend it. Also has a bootable CD or USB setup to use. Just my humble opinion.

Hi All,

I only have 10 gig left after I did clean up in my c driver which has windows installed so I have no choice but to move some of the space from partition d - I will follow all the steps above to see weather I will be sucessful.

In order to use Disk Mgmt to extend C you would need to delete D first after moving its data off. If you must resize D from the left Use Partition Wizard not Easeus which can fail on Resizing which PW cannot.

We really need to see the Disk Mgmt drive map screenshot to advise you correctly since you could have a mix of Primary and Logical partitions. Use Snipping Tool in Start menu.

If both partitions are primary, boot Partition Wizard bootable CD, rightclick D to Resize, slide left grey border to right to free up as much space as you want to add to C, Apply.

Next rightclick C to Resize, slide right grey border to right to take up the newly freed space, OK, Apply all steps.

backup your files first and a Win7 Backup image externally.
