Solved Resolution changes upon restart

For the past several days each time I reboot or power off/on my resolution will switch from 1920X1080 to 640X480 or 800X600. The boot goes well, desktop looks fine then it "blinks" and voila! the resolution changes.
I just changed from an ATI to nVIDIA GPU and the resolution changing remains. Kinda spooky.

Did you clean up the ATI drivers before installing the Nvidia ones? I had similar problems, until I ran CCleaner and found a bunch of ATI junk and reg entries left behind. I removed them, reinstalled the NVidia drivers, and I was all set.

Yes DF I uninstalled ATI drivers and CCC, ran CCleaner and Tuneup registry cleaner before powering off to install the new nVIDIA GTX460.

EDIT: however I did not reinstall nVIDIA drivers but Windows update had a newer one and the problem remians.

The Windows update version won't allow you to use Nvidia control panel.

I installed the same one you did for my 460. Was going to make Snips to show you and Nv control panel would not open.
So I just spent the last 20 minutes un installing the Windows version and installing the newest ASUS/Nvidia driver.

I would suggest the same. Use the latest from MSI or direct from Nvidia. Ooops MSI!
Everything is fine with mine now that I got the right driver.
ASUS happened to have the March 2011 driver so I used it but the one from Nvidia website will work also.

If resolution is still wrong after installing the new driver right click desktop in open area then click Nvidia control panel.
Snip below shows Nv control panel. These are my settings. Ignore them.
Select your resolution if it does not select the right one automatically.
Make sure 32bit color is selected- if not already.
Yours will probably be 60Hz- 99.99% are 60Hz.
Mine is an unusual at 75Hz.

When the Nvidia Windows Update reappears just hide it.
After I installed the new Nvidia driver Win Update still wanted to install its own version. So I hid it.

I typed in Gigabyte above the first time.

Select your version. Not sure from your specs if yours is 460 or 460SE.

Mike, I wondered where "gigabyte" came in, maybe my mobo, LOL
I have completely uninstalled all ATI left-overs, uninstalled and deleted all nVIDIA drivers than tried both the drivers mSi has and also from the nVIDIA site. Probelm remains but is mostly changing to 680X420 now. It's got me stumped.

Oh I did flash my BIOS to a newer version to be compatible to a 6 core CPU. Maybe that's it.

I ended up going to the Nvidia266.xx today from Nvidia.
Asus was still an old one.

You should be able to go into Nvidia control panel I posted earlier and set it.
At 1) in the window it should show monitor.
Then you set what you need and it "SHOULD" stay set after reboot or shutdown.

I'm not sure what is going on.
I will post if I find anything else helpful.

This is just to double check your driver against what I installed today.
Should be the same. We both are using Win 7 64bit .

Device Manager> Display Adapter open it then right click Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 (that is what should show)> then click Properties.

Then click Driver tab.
Yours should be the same driver as mine.
Same model card should be exact same driver. Nvidia doesn't care about brand name of card.

Try saving the screen resolution as a profile.
Normally, the profile loads when Windows starts.

Thanks Mike, I did have the nV CP installed but it was changing my carefully adjusted colors and contrast. After losing thier CP at least the colors etc. will stay set. Yep, my driver is the same one you have.

@ p5bdkw, how do I save the resolution as a profile? I've never had ocsasion to change that area.

In Hopalong X's first screenshot, if you look up at the top you can see Profile. There should be a save setting within.

Thanks Darryl but I have trashed the nVIDIA control panel, PhysX...just using graphics driver. I don't play games (too old ). Reason for upgrading was to get better video from WMP and the DivX players. The nVIDIA panel, when installed, will change my monitor's color settings.

And now a new problem is the color goes awry upon each restart even thought the nVIDIA CP is set to use other app's settings. I reclick it and it changes back to my monitor settings.

I never got that one from Windows. The March one was the first to show up for me.
If it works I guess that is the right one for now.

I've run into that problem with other software- older version was the best.

Maybe the next version will fix the bugs for you.

Update:
Problem of auto resizing still is there. I put in an ASUS flavor GTX460 to day too, same drivers. I was reading in another forum that sometimes left over ATI stuff will cause problems, as you said. Well I looked and found "AMD external events utility" running so I've disabled it...I think.

I think I got it sorted....maybe.

I think...think, I found the problem on the goofy resolution issue. I have Weatherbug installed and it was set to run at 640X480. I unchecked that in the properties dialog and so far after 3 reboots the res is staying at my native 1920X1080. <Crosses fingers>
I did a google search and found many others having the same issues even with XP. One smart cookie found this by checking all his start-ups.

After days and several HOURS of digging and searching and trying to figure out why my resolution on my new 27" monitor kept changing from 1920x1080 to 1360x768 after every restart/resume from sleep, I FINALLY figured it out and I thought it might help someone else down the road. So I updated my drivers for my monitor and my GPU, that didn't help...At last I did a diagnostic test from msconfig (start>msconfig>enter) after going through all the services selections and restarting after unchecking everything, it didn't reset on me! So I dug through all of the services and restarted the computer doing 20 at a time, narrowing it down to the service: Windows Live Mesh remote connections service. And it finally dawned on me that this service must be set at that ugly resolution. So until Micorosft issues a fix for it I am unistalling Live Mesh and I no longer have to be constantly annoyed everytime I restart my computer. I hope this helps someone in the future with this annoying issue!
