Resolution got changed over lunch, cannot revert back to prev. setting

So i returned to my work computer after lunch and the resolution had been changed to 800x600, very odd.
Now i have spent 2 hours trying to get back my resolution to the 1680x1050 that is was before but i still can not choose anything higher then 1600x1200 under Screen Resolution settings. The one with the correct ratio i can choose is 1280x960 and i'd like to bigger one back.

I have updated the driver for my graphics card (ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics accoridng to Device Manager). I have updated the driver for the Monitor (HP LE2201w), but the monitor still shows up as Generic Non-PnP Monitor under Device Manager and now i am out of ideas... I really have no idea what the hell happened when i was gone.
(And yes, the computer was locked so it wasn't someone else changing something)

Uninstalling the driver for the Generic device does nothing, it pops back up again after installing the correct display driver, or after a restart. It's like the display driver i downloaded from HP is not being installed, no idea why.

I thought i'd post this and the boot into the bios and prod around see if i can find something, because at the moment i've lost all hope...

I don't think monitors require drivers. I know you said you uninstalled the driver for the 'Generic Device', but have you tried your graphics driver? It could either be the driver or a third party software messing with the setup.

I'm curious, run a DXDiag by typing into Start Menu Search or typing DXDIAG in Run Command. Check the Display tab for any errors.

I did uninstall the driver for the ATI Radeon 3000, and then i could change to some different resolutions but after a reboot it just installed the same driver again, with the same limitations.

I'll check the Dxdiag tomorrow when i'm back at work!

Dxdiag gives no errors under display.

I looked around system restore before i went home yesterday, saw this on one restore point:

I restored to this point, but it didn't help but maybe it can point to what's wrong?

Also adblock in chrome has just magically stopped working, correlation?

Now i'mlooking in AMD VISION Engine Control Center and it shows my monitor as a CRT one... really what the hell has happened :huh:

Portrait Display Inc Driver? Never heard of that before, and that HP Display Assistant might be conflicting with your AMD CCC.

Maybe, yeah. It should be removed with going to that restore point though and nothing changed.
IT support came up and we tried a new monitor and new VGA cable as well, and still the same limited resolution avaliable..

The "IT Support" didn't help you any further than just replacing the monitor and cable? Sounds like a lame department to me!

Check your Programs and Features menu for those two programs that could conflict with your resolution (HP and CCC).

Yeah, we did some troubleshooting but mostly what i had already tried on my own.
He seemed to have as little clue as me, i guess it'll have to come down to giving it away and he opening it up. I can build my own computer, but troubleshooting the hardware is not something i can do and maybe that's what has broken down.
