Resolving Host

Hi All,

My PC is randomly unable to resolve host names in IE or Chrome This issue occurs about every 20-30 minutes at which time I am unable to get to any website and all network access on the PC stops. I have scoured the forums of many sites and tried all the usual tricks (flush DNS, static DNS servers, static IP address and DHCP IP, and even a different 2 different routers with different firmware (stock and tomato). Here are few things I have discovered. If, when the issue occurs, I pull my network cable and re-attach it, the issue is resolved until next time. Same with disabling and re-enabling the NIC as well as a release / renew on WAN side of router After dealing with this for about a 3 days, I wiped and reinstalled Windows and the problem was resolved for about 3 weeks. Now it is back again. I am at my wits end and really don't want to reinstall Windows again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW, this problem never showed up until I upgraded CPU and MOBO.

Definitely sounds like a DNS issue...

Have you tried pinging the IP addresses of the sites you are trying to get to. This will help narrow down the issue. Also, I am assuming this does not happen on any other computer on the network? When you configured the a static DNS server, what IP address did you give it? Meaning did you use googles DNS servers or your ISPs DNS servers or some other DNS server?

I will retest the pinging but I am pretty sure it failed as well. The DNS servers I assigned were a combination of Google's and my ISP's. I tested with only my ISP's, only Google's and then both...same issue.

Also, when the problem reared its head this time I was out of town and multiple Windows updaets were installed while I was gone. I uninstalled all of the ones that were installed on Tuesday however no change.

I will post back once the problem arises and I will test pinging as well as nslookup.

Thanks.

I didn't see anything mentioning that you've positively gotten the latest drivers for your NIC. Please tell us the make/model of your NIC as well as the driver you're using. If you're using the Intel LAN driver, the current version appears to be version 18.8. Gigabyte driver download page

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
NIC is listed as :

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection 1217-V

Driver is : 12.10.30.0

I will go ahead and uninstall and reinstall the one from the Gigabyte site. I have been suspected the NIC however I before the wipe and reinstall of Windows I did update the drivers with no change.

So far it has not happened this morning (at least not while I have been on PC which has been sparingly) but wil perform all tests ASAP.

Thanks for assistance.

Problem just happened again.

Performed a ping to google.com

"Ping request could not find host".

Performed nslookup to my website:

"DNS Request timed out"

Ping 8.8.8.8

Request timed out.

Checked NIC during this and it showed bytes sent and received increasing while I was unable to connect to internet.

Pulled network cable and immediately stuck it back in...issue gone.

BTW I did uninstall NIC deleting drivers and downloaded and reinstalled before this last series of tests...frustrating to say the least....

Also it appears that all devices on network lose internet connectivity when this occurs...

Uninstalled NIC deleting drivers and downloaded from Gigabyte however it still installed version 12.10.30.0

Not sure where you saw the 18.8 version...

Thanks.

Update: I disabled my onboard NIC and installed a new PCI NIC (Intel PRO 1000 Server) and the problem is back again. Once again it takes down the entire network. No device on the network can access the internet. All devices show "Resolving Host" at bottome. Simply pulling the network cable from the PC nad immediately reinserting it cures the issue...WTF?

Please help!!

From all of this information it seems to be an issue with your ISP since you have replaced your router and the problem persists.

I don't think that is is the case because if I turn this particular PC off then no ther device on the network experiences the issue...it all stems from this PC...

So the sporadic network outages do not happen anymore if the pc is turned off? You have tested this for an entire day?

I have not performed this test for an entire day however all indications are that the issue is originating from my PC. For instance, while watching Netflix on an Xbox One, the issue will suddenly crop up..Netflix freezes because network is down...I walk to my PC, pull its network cable out and immediately put it back in...poof. Issue resolved for the next 20-60 minutes of so...this has been going on for roughly 2 weeks on this Windwos installation and for another few weeks on the previous install so I have a pretty good feel for it...hope that helps...

I have just uninstalled Norton Internet Security as a test to see if it was wreaking havoc however I do not believe that I had it installed on the previous Windows install so I am not very hopeful...

Ok. If you are able to, please provide some packet capture info from the pc. From what you are saying, it seems your pc is saturating the network with some kind of traffic that is not allowing your router to handle any other traffic.

Please also scan your computer with malwarebytes. It may come back with nothing because you have already reinstalled your pc but it is worth a try.

OK. Is there any particular capturing tool that you would like me to run?

Thanks a lot.

Wireshark is my preferred tool. If you have a lot of storage space just let it run so that it captures when everything is working well and when the issues occurs and a little bit after the problem goes away. Sending me the packet capture would be the best way and we can figure out how you want to do that once you have the files.

Also have you checked your event viewer logs to see if there are any errors there?

I created a packet capture using Microsoft Network Monitoring tool however it is 55MB and I cant seem to get the attachment ability to work. It begins with the issue already present and runs for about 5 minutes at which point I pulled the network cable and reinserted it and let it run for another 30 seconds or so. Seems quite obvious as the only thing listed is CarboniteService.exe. Let me know if you still want me to upload it in a different manner and I will do some testing with Carbonite.

I can send you a link to upload the file to my OneDrive account if you want.

I did some research on carbonite and I found one of many posts about this: Internet slowdowns/outages and Carbonite - Verizon Forums

I would try uninstalling carbonite and see if the problem happens again.

I have a spoken with Carbonite and they have escalated it to tier 3. I will update as soon as I know more.

Thanks for all the help but it is clearly Carbonite that is the issue.
