Solved Resource Monitor has one of my Hds always at 100% active

SOLVED:I think I figured it out. I went to manually scan something and when it was done the window showed that the screen saver scan was running even though my screen saver was off and asked if I wanted to stop it so I did. I have since deselected that in my screen saver menu and so far that seems to have stopped all the activity on my hard drive. Thanks for all who tried to help me.




I keep putting the drive offline because im wary of having it always active. Also when I put the drive back online the activity is at 0 but eventually goes back to 100% and I can hear the drive activity. Cpu usage is very low i have a i-7 2600K. Indexing is already off. In the Resource Manager next to the files being accesed most of them under image say SYSTEM and PID 4 if that means anything. Would love some feedback on what I can try to do to resolve this. Thanks

When in the Resource Manager, does any of those files indicate a high activity? If so, after identifying it, try killing the process and see what happens.

I have experienced this problem before. I assume this is not the drive that Windows is installed on?

OPTION 1:
If it is not your primary drive for windows, you can try finding it in device manager and uninstalling the driver, rebooting, and letting windows reinstall the driver. That has worked for some people with this problem in the past. To uninstall a Disk drives driver, click on the start menu, right click computer, click manage, select Device Manager from the drop down list on the left, click on Disk drives, select the drive that is causing you issues, right click that drive, and click uninstall. Reboot your computer. Let Windows reinstall the driver for the drive. This is related to http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/141369-unable-safely-remove-external-hdd.html

OPTION 2:
If it is not the Windows installation drive, it is due to SYSTEM writing information to your hard drive for Windows usage. This is one of the most annoying features of Windows to me. Windows should have to ask permission before writing to a secondary hard drive, in my opinion. If you are not using the drive for backups, try logging in as an administrator, opening My Computer, right clicking the drive, click properties, go to the security tab, click the edit button, select SYSTEM in the list, and click the remove button.

If you are using it to run backups, remove it as described above, and then click Add..., type in SYSTEM, click ok, select SYSTEM from the list, give full control by checking the check box and making sure a check mark appears, and click ok. This will reset the hard drive to prevent Windows from writing to it long enough for Windows to hopefully forget it is there to write to.

Do you mean RESOURCE MONITOR as found on the PERFORMANCE tab (bottom) on TASK MANAGER? If so, it should say what physical files are being read/written.

In Resource Monitor > Disk tab it tells you which processes create the activity. What are those. If it is one of the svchost.exes, you have to dig deeper to find the .dlls.

I stand corrected. If this were a SYSTEM related issue, it would have been Windows related. Since it is your antivirus, I would recommend downloading and installing Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download to see if you have malware on your system that your antivirus missed.

When it is done a log will pop open in Notepad. Save to desktop and upload with your next post.

You are not the first one who has this problem with Avast. Maybe you want to consider uninstalling it (but with this Avast uninstaller) and use MSE instead.

Yankee 6: What application did you use to scan which showed you the issue with the screen saver? Did you notice it on resource monitor? Thanks

I right clicked on a file to scan with Avast my screen saver. It showed I already had a scan running in the background which was the screen saver avast scan. Resource monitor is what showed all the avast activity.
