Resource Monitor - Sporadic after Updates

Greetings,

I'm having a problem where Resource Monitor basically fails to start monitoring. When I load it, the lists are blank - clicking on "Start Monitoring" typically has no effect at first, but if I continue clicking it, usually it will eventually start.

This is a brand new build. It ran a number of updates last night, but everything seemed to be working fine with resource monitor prior to this. I've tried a clean boot, disabling services, etc. and while it seemed to help at first (at least disabling services related to X-Fi sound card), the problem came right back.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64
I5-2500
Asus P8P67 LE motherboard
4 GB Corsair DDR3 (1333)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer

Running Avast antivirus (free), not much else.

Any ideas? I've seen this posted a few places, but don't see any real solutions.

Couple of things I can think of:

1) Boot into safe mode, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI, then rename the folder called Rtbackup. If this creates a fuss you may need to take ownership of the folder.

2) The other generic thing you can do is to run sfc scan to fix corrupted system files. If resmon is important for you and nothing works, you can attempt a repair install after backing up critical data.

Thanks Bill - what exactly is Rtbackup?

Rtbackup folder stores event viewer logs.

You can also try resetting the reliability monitor, heres a tut, it'll work with win7.
