I seem to be the only person on the planet with this precise problem. I have no other computer issues, but when I open Resource Monitor, I can see the window frame with the title at the top and the three (File, Monitor, Help) buttons below it. The body of the window, however is totally empty and transparent ( I can see my desktop wallpaper through it). Nothing I try adds any content to the window. I don't have a clue except that maybe I have disabled a service that I am unaware that Resource Monitor requires.

I just thought I would give you guys a shout before I unnecessarily waste a bunch time and effort on something that isn't actually the problem and possibly make things worse for what might have otherwise had a simple and easy fix.

How long has this been going on? Have you tried a system restore to before this started? Have you tried running a sfc/scannow?

It's a fairly new system. Just been a few weeks. I haven't tried system restore. Since it's not really a seriously prohibitive issue, I would prefer to discover the root of the problem directly if I can. I think I can learn and remember more that way. Throwing together some hardware is vastly easier than learning all the soft details of what makes it go, but I enjoy the ride.

Okay, I ran scf /verifyonly and "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Since it looks like it isn't a known issue, I guess I'll go through all the disabled services, enable them one at a time and see if that's possibly the source of the problem. Any other ideas for pinpointing the problem would be appreciated.

Open Windows Explorer and up in the search box type "wdc" (without quotes). Post a snip of the screen. I think you probably deleted some manifest files. Have you been running CCleaner? :(

Forgot to mention:
Click on your C drive in the left pane first before searching.

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
I wanted someone to ask for a screenshot of what he could(n't) see.

If it was my computer I would do a repair install next. I don't know if will fix a bad update. My reasoning behind this is. If such a problem is happening their could be more problems you haven't noticed yet. I and a few billion people have all their Windows 7 updates without this problem.

Hmmmmmmmm, you should have had a bunch of things come up with the "wdc". I just did mine and got approximately 15 hits. I still would try a system restore myself but if you would rather not ......... have you considered a repair installation?

(As also suggested to you by Layback Bear. We posted at the same time I guess, second time today this has happened with me  )

I'm not sure a Windows repair install will replace the missing files but you might give that a try if you don't have a restore point prior to your "testing" of CCleaner. Otherwise, a clean install may be in order.

Lesson here; Don't run CCleaner without supervision. :)

Thanks for the help and suggesitons, everyone. carwiz, I've been using CCleaner since it was called Crap Cleaner (probably 8 years or so) and have never had a problem. I'm reasonably informed and generally methodical in my approach to computer management. Yes, I have restore points if I need them as well as a complete system image made directly after a fresh install and set up. I'm perfectly aware of multiple ways to resolve the issue, but that wouldn't tell me exactly what the problem was to begin with which is essentially what I was asking for help with.

Indianacarnie, I've located all of my manifest files in C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests and there's bunch of 'em along with a bunch of Security Catalog files.

Is there something in particular you think I should be looking for?

Britton30,

Seems like kind of quirky fix, but that solved the problem. I was using the Windows Classic theme. You truly are a guru. And I've learned some cool stuff in the process from the rest of you other guys as well. Thanks, one and all.

You might try a reboot and retry the classic theme again to see if it will work now.

Maybe I will later, but I've decided it's just silly to put together a machine like this one, that can easily handle the load, and then try to squeeze an extremely modest increase in performance out of it by limiting various functionalities that actually make the overall computing experience more enjoyable.

Thanks again,
Nick
