Solved Restart not working

Can anyone help please.
Windows 7 64 bit Acer laptop 5810TZG
If I select "Restart" the process seems to commence. When it reaches the stage of a black screen, nothing else happens. It is not "Off". I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to get it off and then I can restart normally.
