Restart problem

Hello,

I've AMD Athlon 3600+ on Asus A8N-E Motherboard with 1GB RAM.
I've installed Win7 a couple of weeks ago and it worked just fine until yesterday, when the restart problem appeared: when I try to restart the machine, it shuts down all programs and windows, but it won't restart the hardware - it hangs on the black screen, when the monitor displays "no signal", but there's no actual restart. On the first time when I push the restart button on the PC nothing happens, and only on the second push the system restarts.

I don't even know if it's a software problem, or my motherboard tricks me...

Thanks in advance!

Hi rainbringer, welcome to the forums.

Firstly what software have you recently installed? More importantly, AntiVirus, some have been known to halt the Shutdown/Restart process. Also, what build of Windows 7 are you using?

This info could be invaluable when it comes to helping solve your issue :)

Delete your pagefile. It's possible it may have become corrupted.

Wow! On the first 5 forums I've registered to, I have an average of ½ reply in a couple of days :D

I'm currently at work so can't tell about my Win7 build - don't remember.
The last software I installed was Photoshop CS3 two weeks ago - much before the problem appeared.
But I've updated Windows with a critical update - new definitions for the... mmm.. forgot its name... some kind of protector :)
I've AVG 8.5 Free installed - I think it was the first appilcation I've installed on the system and before the problem has begun I hasn't updated it, so I don't think it's related to the problem.
I haven't ran any registry cleaners yet.

So... my actions when I return home:
1) finding out my Windows build :)
2) deleting my pagefile
3) disabling my AVG
Before steps 2 and 3 I'll check if the problem persists.

I'll report if something helps.

Thank you all!

1 quick note, disconnect from the net when you deactivate AVG, just as a safety precaution.

Tried all the suggested - nothing helped.

The problem was solved by restoring my system to the restore point before the two last Win7 updates.

Thanks to all!
