I "downgraded" from windows 8 to windows 7, and in order to do this I wiped the drive and created a new partition table, before I did that I used the windows backup utility to create a disk image on an external drive of the W8 system. Now I have installed W7 on one partition and have made another partition for W8, what I want to do is "restore" my image backup onto that partition, hopefully allowing me to dual boot, at the very least access the files. But I haven't been able to find a way to do that.

Sorry, not a fan of built-in MS backup apps, always use Macrium Reflect ... but I believe that when you go to "restore" that backup, it's going to write it to the same physical locations on the disk as they were previously, effectively wiping out what is there now.

One of the many reasons I went to a third-party backup/restore app is the wealth of additional options.
