Wife's computer will not restore to ANY of the 40 or so restore points. She created a restore point, installed a program then decided it was not what she wanted. When she attempted to restore, she immediately gets an error message - System restore did not complete. blah blan. The parameter is incorrect 0x80070057. Tried safe mode and a couple other things with same results. I can create a new restore points but they will not work either. Malwarebytes found nothing. Turned restore off and then back on. Ran chkdsk /r which found nothing. MS Fix It says it cannot automatically fix this computer.

Have no idea how long this has been an issue as she does not remember the last time she used restore. Computer runs great with no other issues.
Any suggestions?

Ron

I had a similar problem with my Windows refusing to restore to previously saved points and found out it was related to my antivirus (at the time Kaspersky). Make sure to disable any security software you have installed on your PC.

I would end the software's processes and also disable its startup entries from msconfig: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

Then restart the PC, make sure the AV is not running and then try to restore once again.

gregrocker, already tried restore from system recovery using the Win 7 disk with no luck. Only her primary C: is listed, no recovery listed. Had not thought about restore allotted size but it is set at 24%.

Burdus77, the last few times I'm getting details: System restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or deleted during the restore.

Have not got the 0x80070057 error today.

Pretty much tried everything suggested along with anything else I could find all to no avail. Could not get repair install to work either - said it could not repair this computer. Hate to do a clean install but looks as if that is what it is going to take. She has full bootable backups going back a full year but everyone of them have the same issue. The only image she has is 8 months old but also has the same issues. Oh well! It is what it is! Appreciate all the help but I have ran out of options that I have not already tried. Will immediately make an image and remove it from the computer so she can't get to it this time!

It sounds like you did Startup Repair instead of Repair Install.

For Repair Install or Clean Reinstall use the latest WIn7 installer ISO burned to DVD or written to flash stick with tool given in steps 1 and 2 here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Post back screenshots of any error messages after resolving issues it may find when it starts by runnning the Win7 upgrade advisor.

I would try and do a repair install first instead of a full clean install, but it's up to you.

A repair install would save you a lot of time and hassle.

Another thing Anaron, I'm just curious as to whether you have ever resized or moved around your Windows partition? As this come sometimes cause errors with System Restore.

Sorry for the slow response. Danged ac went out at the house (where computer is) yesterday and in this Texas heat, that ain't pretty!

gregrocker, you are correct as I it was startup repair not repair install. However I did have issues with repair install as it keeps telling me I need SP1 which I have had since it came out. Update shows in list and computer properties also shows SP1. The Windows 7 Pro iso X17-59183 dvd gives me a message "This version of windows could not be installed." When I can get it a little cooler at the house (waiting on AC man), I will get back on the issue.

Burduss77, nothing has changed on this computer. WD velocity raptor as primary drive for everything and WD raptor for backing up the primary drive, one partition on both drives.

Anaron what you'll need to do is download an ISO that doesn't include SP1. Firsuninstall SP1, then do the repair install then re-install SP1 after. Repair Install can only work on the same version you originally installed.

So if you originally had Windows without SP1 then downloaded the update you will have to use an RTM disc.

If your Windows originally had SP1 installed right from the get-go then an SP1 disc will do a repair install.

I believe this link includes the ISO's without SP1

Download Windows 7 ISO (Official 32-bit and 64-bit Direct Download Links) « My Digital Life

How could OP not have SP1 installed? Do you have your Updates set to Automatic? It should have pushed it through long ago. It isn't even the Win7 OS without SP1.

I would install SP1 from Windows Updates, see if that solves your problem. If not Repair Install with latest installer to save hours of updating.

Actually I would Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get a perfect one while we are here to help you, then save an image so you never have to reinstall again.

Greg, I think he has SP1 already installed. But it was my understanding that if you installed RTM then SP1 from a Windows Update then you could only do a repair install from an RTM disc and not one with SP1 integrated?

That's true, Burdus, only if using an ISO with SP1 slipstreamed. The latest installer for the same version and bit-rate should work.

What is exact the error given? Google its text verbatim to see how to solve it.

Another workaround is to uninstall SP1 to use the pre-SP1 installer, but it's a huge waste of time doing all the updates and SP1 again. Before doing that I'd clean reinstall which is likely your best path here anyway.

Ah I didn't realise it was just the slipstreamed discs that wouldn't work.

Thanks for that Greg.
