Does anyone know why I lose my restore points after an "optimized" defrag? I have used several of my favorites that worked well with XP,but 7 will have no part of it.I have Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and Volume Shadow Copy enabled and set to run at start up.If I disable either of those,System Restore does not operate properly(no restore points are created)Tried so far were Smart Defrag,Defrag Express,My Defrag, and JK which claimed to be "shadow copy aware" Please help an XP guy that skipped over Vista.

Are you dual booting perhaps? That will mess restores up, if so. There's ways around that too I think. I don't use this feature so I dunno.

O&O Defrag will not exhibit this behavior. It even lets you know that shadow copies are enabled when it's defragging, at the bottom.

lol I have the opposite problem. Something, possibly WU, keeps on enabling my restore points and then I have to go and turn it off. O&O actually alerts me to this.

Hello Detailer,

This was a issue when dual booting with XP and Vista as well. You can use the same tutorial below to hide Windows 7 from XP by just substituting Windows 7 for Vista in the tutorial. This will need to be done inside XP.

Hope this helps,

After some digging around, I found this that may help. Increasing your maximum disk space used by System Restore for restore points and shadow copies may help.

Defragging does not change files (it only defragments or moves them), but it does change the disk (moving a file is a change to the disk). The Shadow Copy service remembers all these changes in big files in the "C:\System Volume Information\...." folder. When the total amount of diskspace used by shadow copies exceeds a threshold then the oldest snapshot (restore point) is automatically deleted.

Thanks Brink

Going from 6% (which was twice what I used for XP) to 16%-not sure as even with only one or two restore points on hand, they are deleted after defrag.Very tricky finding what plays nicely with 7,and have needed system restore a few times already. Also a big believer in the optimized defrag,so it seems I can't have my cake and eat it too

Thanks for that link-interesting in deed-also very nice that your first post was to help someone out,as opposed to seeking help-very rare and greatly appreciated

I've found the latest version of O&O Defrag to play very nicely with W7 and system restore. It is the best defrag app I've tried to date and the one I'm now using. (Won out over Perfect Disk, because it is lighter on resources while operating in the background and seems to have better optimization algorithms.)
