Restoring a file from Back Up

Is it possible to extract a file ,folder from a backup running Win 7 ? My friends computer crashed he I tried to use the backup image without any luck, so I reformatted losing personal info pics, music and docs. I'd like to restore mentioned files if possible. can you help? thanks
