Restoring Data after Hard Drive Crash

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional that suffered a partial hard drive failure. I can't image the hard drive, but using a Ubuntu Live CD I was able to extract the USER folder off the hard drive. I am replacing the hard drive today, and will reinstall Windows 7 from the original media.

Once I reinstall Windows 7 from my DVD and set the same user account back up is there a way I can import the data from my old USER folder that I was able to save from the damaged drive directly into the new one? I'd really like to keep all the settings, etc I had established previously without having to set it all back up again.

I dont think this can be done. Are these settings to programs or settings in windows?

you can restore data from the .old file, but there aren't going to be any settings saved I dont think..

Sorry maybe someone else will know a way.

I think I see what you mean, but I dont know if overwriting the /user folder with your older /user folder is safe

That was my question... Obviously if the old system would boot I could use the Easy Transfer Wizard to do it, I guess what I'm asking is if there is a manual way to extract the same information from the USER folder I have that it would have done?

Try Create a new user with the same name of old, loguin, look at c:\user\"nameolduser" logoff, loguin as administrator, rename c:\user\"nameolduser" to "nameolduser_old" or something like... Restore your old user directory, and check if is with the same name of user.
