Restoring Windows Backup System Image & Cluster Size

Hello all,

I'm going to attempt to create a System Image for the first time with Windows Backup so when I need to reformat I can have the image handy.

My question is this, I'm using 64kb cluster-size on my install drive. Will using the System Tools disc to restore the System Image correctly restore the partition with the 64kb cluster size on its own?

Should I choose the "format and repartition" option if so, or leave it unchecked? What is the difference?

I've googled around and haven't found any discussion on this. Thank you for any input.

My guess is that the image is independent of the clusters and you needn't be concerned with it---just as you don't have to be concerned about file systems when installation an application or saving a Word document. The image is just another file, regardless of the underlying file system.

Wait for another opinion--I've just made an educated guess.

Well moreover, when you run the Rescue CD to install an image it supposedly offers to "reformat and repartition" the space the image is going into. So not sure how the utility itself handles it

I can't recall any reference to cluster size or formatting when using other imaging applications, such as Macrium--which leads me to believe clusters are irrelevant when restoring.

I'd assume that if your imaging app can in fact format and you choose to do so, then clusters would be a consideration, but not if you don't reformat.

Just a question from me, why are you changeing the cluster size, Windows 7 know what's best for it, let it do it's thing

4kb cluster sizes are based on the days when storage space was at a premium.

Regardless I'm just looking for an answer to my question... if the Windows 7 Repair disc does Format&Repartition when restoring the image, is it smart enough to preserve cluster size?
