Reusing a master HDD with corrupt OS as a slave...couple questions!

The reason UAC is important for all but the most experienced users is if a rogue infection tries to run something you will be prompted with UAC and hopefully notice that something is running that you didn't initiate.

So far, so good--my husband's OEM disc worked just fine, and we're currently--slowly--taking care of the updates. We've already witnessed the dramatic startup speed of the SSD; way awesome!

3. I move all user files (Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos) to the HDD. The best way is to make new folders on the HDD with those respective names and move your stuff into the respective folders. Then you right click on each folder and INCLUDE it into the repective library.

By clicking include, does it make a copy on the SSD and the HDD? Or does that just re-designate where to send the files to (in this case, the HDD instead of the SSD)?

Once you copy your User folders from backup onto the HD, rightclick each to include in the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums.

Keep the empty User folder on C in the same library so you can see if anything is written there and simply drag it over to D.

It will no longer be on the SSD. It just re-designates the library where to look for the files. In this case it would be on the HDD instead of the SSD.

It will actually not re-designate the original folders. Those will stay put but will be empty - except the Documents folder that some programs use as repository for small files. The new folders on the HDD will be an extra entry in the library which YOU will use as repository for your files.

You'll see, it works very well.

The alternative would be to change the location of reference of the original folders - and that can be messy.

I think we've applied all/most of everyone's suggestions. We still need to reformat my old hard drive today.

The latest head scratcher is that sometimes when we restart, we get an error message. On the 'Loading Operating System...' screen, it sits there for a good 5-10 seconds and then gives the message:

A disk read error occurred
Pres Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart

On the last restart we just did, this happened two times in a row. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing that?

Hmm, that is very strange. I have never seen that in 4 years of SSD operation with 6 different SSDs. What make/model is your SSD ??

Hmm, husband said he didn't run updates for the new SSD. We'll give that a go and see if it clears up the problem.

The SSD is already updated with the latest firmware so I guess that's not a solution....

That's an 840 series. Some other people had reported problems with it. The 830 series seems to be more stable.

Do you have a flash stick plugged in at time you reboot, or any other drive?

Try setting SSD first to boot in BIOS setup to be sure.

Run a full Disk Check

Obviously it seems like I need to get a different SSD now; do you think we should switch to the 830 or are there brands that you think will outperform the Samsungs?

This whole thing is becoming very maddening. Photoshop is also giving me issues with using the key code, but I guess I need to hold off on that anyway if I have to get a new SSD. I own a small photography business and my computer crashed right when I had a huge order to place so this is just icing on the cake. I'm very jealous of all you computer savvy people!

The Samsung 830 is good or the Crucial M4. And 128GB would probably suffice. Performance is all the same. Don't get impressed by those high transfer nums.. They do nothing for the OS. It is the fast access time that gives the performance.
