Reusing a Win7 licence on a new computer

I purchased a Win7 Pro licence when it first came out to upgrade a computer using Vista. While this significantly improved performance, the computer recently died on me and it is not worth trying to repair. I would therefore like to reuse the licence on a laptop that is still running Vista.

Question: as my old computer died with Win7 still installed, if I install it on my laptop, it will appear to MS that I have tried to use it on two PCs - how can I deregister it from my old computer and register it on my laptop?

Thanks in advance.

Hello exspextations,

If this is a retail license instead of OEM you have, then you have nothing to worry about since it will only be installed on the laptop. If it doesn't activate online as usual, then you could just activate by phone instead.

If this is an upgrade instead of full copy of Windows 7 Pro, then the tutorial below will help show you how to do a clean install with it if you like.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Apologies for not responding sooner, but I have been away for a break. The copy of Win7 Pro is a full retail version and so, from what you say, I should not have any problems beyond possibly the need to register by phone.

Thank you for your help - I will let you know how the update proceeded when I have time to do the upgrade. :)
