ridiculous network problem i am facing

hi guys.
i need some help.
i have an awesome pc with some of the best specs and i am almost a game freak.
evrythng runs smoothly on my pc.
but what is bothering me is that my network problems.
first of all i do not know what do with my advanced network settings such as aps mode ,flow control,buffers,etc.
any idea of what should i do.
and secondly of late i am facing a new problem "packet loss"
which is frustating me from playing online gam,es.
i use a cable connection with direct connector at the back.
so anyone .please help me out..

Before you go tweaking your advanced settings you may want to resolve the current problems with the default settings.

Packet loss can be caused by many things. Poor network connections, configuration issues, incorrect network protocols, etc.

We could use a ton more info about your network setup.

Are you running "homegroup"? do you have other computers on the network?

thanks a lot for replying man.
i am running windows 7 ultimate genuine version.
i have a 2 mb connection by cable directly through rj45 connector.
here are my pc specs.
intel core 2 quad @2.83 ghz
asus p5q pro mobo
gts 250 graphic
atheros lan driver
4 gb ram
realtek audio driver

First, how are you determining that you have packet loss? Do you have a router? (If not, you should have one...not that it would solve your issue, but no one in their right mind would have a broadband connection without one today!).

Do you have any other computers on this network (probably not if you don't have a router).

Quite often, packet loss happens between your cable modem and the gateway from your ISP. This usually indicates a problem with the cable coming to your house from the pole, or a problem from the pole to the head-end where you actually connect to your ISP.

When you experience these issues, I recommend that you run
ping -t 192.168.1.1 (most likely the IP address of your home gateway...if not, adjust to suit)
pint -t x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is replaced with the IP address of your ISP's gateway. You can find this from the status page of your router)

If the first one drops packets...well you know the problem is with your computer or within your house
If the first one is fine, but the second one drops, you know the problem is with the ISP or the cable coming to your house from the pole.

Note: If you don't have a router and are direct to your PC....then just look at the PC and these addresses are going to be the same thing.

Well I would start off with contacting your ISP about the packet loss and let them run diagnostics on your link. Once you have sorted this out then look at setting up your network This should not be such a huge story once you connection is sorted

Yeah it's possible but rare that the packet loss is on your end. Packet loss nearly always means that between you and the game servers, the net is overloaded and dropping packets.

You can somtimes find out where if you know the game server address by using the command:
tracert <server address> at a command prompt.

It will tell you the ping time between you and every router on the net, from you to the game server. You will frequrently find that there is one hop that is lagging or has packet loss, that's where the problem is. It may be local to your ISP or the game server itself or somwhere in between.

Although this is informative it probably won't help you in anyway, unless you can choose to change game servers if there are multiples in other cities. Or if local to you ISP you can complain to them but I wouldn't expect them to listen, they NEVER do.

thanks all of you for your replies .
i dont exactly know that whether it is packet loss or something else.
i found it out on pingtest.net.
it said 20% packet loss.
and i also found that when i am running fifa 10 online.
it lags like anything .so i matched the two.but what should i do .
my isp don even understand the problem .
they are saying that its just a false result.
any tweak that i can do manually to fix.

Well if your ISP cannot or will not diagnose it then maybe a new ISP may be in order. If they don't know about packet loss them I would start to wonder how good they are at server administration

ya you are right man.i dont understand what type of service they are providing.
i feel like helpless.
but aby of fixing it manually.

they asked me to show what the problem is .
is there any way to show to them that there is a problem in heir connection.

Well try a "tracert <address>" and find out WHERE the packet loss is ocurring.

It may be on your ISPs nbetwork or somewhere else. You can atleast figure out where it's happening and then know if it's likely their fault or not...

The names returned for the router hops are ususaly just helpful enough to tell if it's your ISPs problem or not.
