right click on taskbar and hit C

Probably a lost cause but...

I've made a habit (from XP) whenever I want to close a folder or other program, I right-click it on the taskbar and hit 'c' on my keyboard. However, in Windows 7, it just highlights 'close' and doesn't actually close it.

Is there any way at all to get it to work the way it did? It helps me close many windows quickly and efficiently without clicking a billion times.


Also, I'd like my classic start menu back, without having to pay some shady 3rd party.

Edit: Also, is there a way to set ctrl+alt+del to just open up the task manager?

Hello Eulogy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can also use ALT + F4 to close the active window.

There's no need to pay for any program, when you can use CSMenu or Classic Shell for free. They are great and safe programs.

I know of alt+f4 - I use most windows shortcuts (even windows key + pause, windows key + e, windows key + d, etc), but I generally don't feel like cramping my thumb when I'm closing many specific windows (I may want to leave some open so I can't just mash alt+f4).

It's not really the money I'm concerned about; I don't want to have to run unnecessary programs to have the quickness and functionality of the classic start menu. It was more of a complaint than anything, but thanks for the links regardless, I'll look into them.

I may just switch back to XP if every little thing is going to inconvenience me. I hate to be that stubborn guy that refuses to change with the times, but when I see features I used being removed with no good reason I tend to get a little frustrated.

On the subject of shortcuts.....

When I'm closing down my pc, I normally close all open windows, then hit ALT-F4 to close the machine. For some reason, in W7, I have to hit ALT-F4 twice. The first time I do it, nothing happens, the 2nd time, I get the shutdown dialog.

Obviously on the 1st hit, the desktop isn't in focus. I don't know why. Does this happen to anyone else?

Thank you, this is something I will be able to get used to. There's no option to default to the classic menu options instead of the jumplist?

Nope, doesn't happen to me. But what you can do is just repeatedly press 'Alt' + 'F4' on every window until the desktop shows but keep tapping. Fast and easy.
