Rogaine

I ordered several bottles of this stuff, because that while I'm not bald, my hair has thinned considerably over the years, and I suspect that I will be someday. However, after reading the instructions and considering, I have hesitated to start using it.

The reason for this is that it says that it is normal for it to cause some hair to fall out, before new hair new hair replaces them. Since this product is only effective for 85% of users, which leaves 15% for which it isn't, I'm concerned that it may hasten baldness instead. Just how much hair loss should be expected? Any experience here?

I've read that this product is a catch 22. If it does work for you, you'll have to take it forever. If you ever stop taking it, you'll loose what hair you did grow soon after.

I'm not sure what long term medical side effects there may be, but are some short term ones.

The male baldness thing runs in my dad's side of the family, so I just started buzzing my hair with the 1/8" attachment on the clippers in my mid-20's. Whether it helped or not, I don't know, but I have more hair at my current age than my dad or my uncle did. I'm guessing my mother's side of the family actually made more of a difference than how I cut my hair.

For me, personally, I wouldn't bother with Rogaine, or transplants though.

Thanks, that's an interesting article, but I'm uncertain how much weight to give it, because the author is promoting the sale of his book instead.

I'm not likely to buy the book, because in the page where he touts it, he doesn't give any specific information on his technique. That is a ploy too often used to lure buyers, which have no recourse after paying the price.

Still, while one may experience a variety of problems, it still doesn't specifically address my question. However, chances are that those bottles will remain in the bathroom closet, instead of being used. I haven't reached the point of desperation...yet.

I have had dealings with this product & patients for 20 years now. If you want what little hair it grows, you have to religiously keep applying it forever to just maintain the small benefit of some improved hair growth. It is a non-stop money maker for the company that makes it

I have always hated hats, which is part of the reason that I hated being in the Army...years ago. However, I did just buy a straw gambler's hat, just in case Rogaine messed me up. Now that I have it, I kind of like it, because it is one of those one size fits all, and the band makes it fit snug and comfortable.

Hmm, according to the book promo in Brink's link, the cause of baldness is the growth frontal and parietal bone growth of the skull, which would suggest extra space needed for brain growth. However, I never considered the Army to be mind expanding.

I am 64 years and I have gotten steadily bald over the last 20 years. I tend to think it is a side effect of a medicine I have taken over the years, but no proof of that. Anyway, my hairline stats in the middle of my head. What I do to help give me a look of a "better appearance" is to color my hair. It gives me a nice look and makes that baldness not so bad. I use "Just for Men". You might consider that.

I'm only a year younger than you, but still have a bit more coverage than you. However, I was born with somewhat fine hair, and high forehead, so perhaps the hair loss is more noticeable to me. Still, I'm not ready for dying the hair...unless the gray tips of my sideburns spreads rapidly.
