I've been wanting to re-live this classic for a while now, but after running flawlessly on my Windows 7 x64 system it freezes, locking the entire system and requires a full restart (No BSOD, just entire system lock-up). I've researched everywhere and tried everything in my power to try and get this game to work without crashing (Compatibility mode, patches/addons etc) but to no avail. Other forums have said the game works fine on both 64 and 32 bit versions of Windows 7 so I'm wondering if it may be my hardware...
I dunno it works fine on my machine and I run it in Compat mode for Win98
Running Win7 RC x32 atm but it sounds like you do have some sort of hardware problem
Does it do this for any of your other games?
Everything else runs without a single problem - it's actually the first problem I've encountered in Windows 7. After a good 20 minutes the system just stops...I've also run it on this hardware before without problems. Would the 64 bit OS be doing anything to the game?
Good possibility
Back when it was created there were no such things as Ghz processors much less Dual and Quad Core 64 bit machines
So that COULD be doing it
I know elsewhere on this forum people have trouble with games on either the 32bit Win7 or 64 Bit Win7 but mostly 64 Bit as so much doesn't really "Support" 64 bit it just works somewhat.
So I'd try it on some other OS if you got one on the computer and see if it halts there too, if so I'd consider Uninstalling it Reinstalling it via Compatibility mode.
try closing all background apps like skype, miranda, outlook, browsers etc.
starcraft freezes for me if I run skype / miranda / vlc or anything like that in the background - if I close all background programs there's not a single freeze.
Same here, specs in dropdown. Total freeze, however audio still works (doesn't loop?). Everyone in this thread who has problems has an 8800 of some sort (inc. rebadges), I thought it could've been a G92 problem, but the 8800gts is a G80...
Occurs in RCT1 too, it didn't do it early on in the RC, since a few months back with the late RC/RTM it's started doing it. Windows or driver update perhaps?
Can't find any fix atm, I've got around all problems with the other games so far under Windows 7 (inc. Chaos Theory FTR), but I can't figure this one out.
For the record, it's not an x64 problem, either - my RC was x86 and still had issues.

I had this problem with the RC and now in the final. Before I did a clean install I put Vista back on my PC for about a week to test if the game crashes. After MANY hrs and lots of days I never had a single problem running the game with this hardware under Vista. Then I did a clean install of 7. About 5 mins into the game it locks up my PC forcing a reset. I try again and I can play for an hr then again it locks my PC.
After installing 7 (final) I knew I wanted to solve this problem so I only installed drivers and this game b4 I tested it. I didn’t even have my security software installed yet. Like I said I got about 5 mins in b4 it crashed.
Since then I attempted to run the game in all the compatibility modes to see if one worked but still the same result (Some didn’t even load the game).
Anyway I hope somehow this could get solved. RCT2 I’ve been playing since it came out and have no plans to stop now.
By the way, it runs GREAT on my Vista laptop, but I like playing on my desktop.
Ive tried some diffrent settings and the following has worked so far (1 day no crash). You all should see if it works for you.
In game compatibility select the following:
Run compatibilty mode for Vista SP2
Setings check the following:
Run in 256 colors
Disable Visual Themes
Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Again it worked for a day so far. I don't know if you need all that selected thats just what I got so far. Im gonna run the game and let it sit to see if it still happens.
