Rolling back to XP

Nope Couldn't give a monkey's, I only built the computer last week so I haven't had time to fill it full of rubbish yet. So I am quite happy to format the primary partition if this is possible?

Well then
Create a new partition, and install XP on to the new partition
after you have done that, you can then either keep or delete
the windows 7 OS if you so wish as robertoszwald said.

I'll do that! If I set it away now it'll be done by the time I feel sleepy.

I'll install XP, format the partition with Win7 on, reinstall XP back onto the partition it was on, then at a later date think about Win7 again.

You may have a hard time formatting the "System" partition (the first partition/OS on the HDD) I had a problem formatting Vista one time when it was the system partition; I can't remember the workaround right now, I just thought I'd give you a heads up about it.

Well so far I have reinstalled XP64 onto a different partition and it boots up quite happily into XP, but it won't let me format the old partition that Win7 was on. I will have a play around again tomorrow, it's 1.30am here and I am ready for my bed

In disk management it is still listed as "system".

Hello Takeshi.


Why don't you leave 7 there for a while, you may come to like it; you can always add a boot entry to the boot menu so you can get back into 7: it boots straight into XP now, right? You'd have to do a repair on 7.

When you've rested have a look at the tutorials, at the links below; I know it says Vista but it works with 7. I use the dual boot guide myself. You don't have to decide any time soon, you've got your XP back and that's what you wanted.

You should use this the ultimate boot CD.

What is on your D: partition labeled "AcerData"?

If thats a recovery partition, you should check with acer web support to see how to restore the system to "new". It will reinstall whatever OS came with the PC and all the necessary drivers, including any software that came with PC (although most is usually unwanted).

If the windows 7 partition is marked as the "Active" partition, that might be why it won't allow you to delete it.
Go into disk management, check which is marked as active and if its the 7 partition, right click on XP's partition and choose it to be the active partition.

Robert, I didn't use any software just Windows' own. I also think I am too much of a novice looking at ultimateboot CD looking at their website, I wouldn't know what to download

The disk is marked dark blue, I have tried right clicking it etc. to see if I can find this 'active' option and I can't. My friend suggests I put one his spare copies of Windows Vista Business that he liberated from work and forget about x64.

There is no AcerData or any thing, I build this computer myself and having owned an Acer laptop, I certainly wouldn't buy anything off them again.

took out the entire HDD with ulitmate boot CD, feck it! I wasn't happy with the size of some of the partitions as it was :lol:

Yeah, the only reason I am rolling back to XP is because of problems with my motherboard and wireless, I'll be back to Win7 when it (and my hardware) are fully compatible with it

And I can make my games partition larger as it was getting a bit on the small side!

If you want to give a try to Windows 7 again just install Sun VirtualBox 2.2.4 (it is free) and install Windows 7 in a virtual machine.
You will be able to make a lot of tests and there your network should work.


And you can now natively mount the VHD in VirtualBox.

Yes, that's what I did, start over from the beginning and re-install everything.

I'm pleased to see you're getting it sorted.

Windows 7 can now run VM nativly, along with virtual XP.

Good to hear that your not giving up on Seven entirely for this machine, in due time better drivers and more of them will be available.
