Rotinom -Computer & external HD Scared Im going to lose all my pics

Hi,

Upfront confession I had no internet security in place. I've learnt my lesson...but if anyone can help me sort this I'd be really grateful. I've read previous posts, but Im afraid they dont make a lot of sense to me.

I have an old laptop with little on it except itunes, an external hardrive with loads of photos on it and a new laptop.

I moved itunes from old to external and then tried to upload to new. When I opened external in new (which has McAfee free trial on it), it quarantined 50% of my files including 10 years of photos and my itunes, saying that they had W32 Rotinom.

How do i get this off my external and able to get clean files onto my new laptop please?

Im assuming that most of these were photos that you took i would say that it had a false positive or something like that.

Since your av put in quarantine you should be able to remove them back out of quarantine without any trouble.

But i could be wrong so don't do that yet.

According to my research so far i haven't found it to mess with photo's.

It copying itself to removable drives sounds about right though.

Hold on ill see what i can come up with.

It says it sets up it's folder to be hidden hmm.

Does your antivirus scanner tell the directory of witch it found the virus?

Or does it make a log we could look at?

I don't think your photos are the virus or your i tunes so im not worried to much about those.

Going and researching online i have found no instances of where it has anything to do with photos or itunes.

The only connection i see is it likes to replicate via external hard drives.

Since these are photos I would go ahead and restore them back from quarantine and see what happens assuming that they were false positives.

For know only restore the stuff you know is safe (like your photos)

Could you give us a log or a snapshot of all of the stuff it found? I am assuming that not all of it was photos.
