Well, the prices seem a bit out of wack, i.e. Starter for $199 seems crazy, and Professional for $299 Full version retail is less than what Vista Ultimate was as release, but still a bit high. Looking at current Vista SKUs, we might be able to guess an OEM price.

Vista Ulimate Full retail is $236 at Newegg
Vista Ultimate Full OEM is $180 at Newegg
Vista Ultimate Upgrade Retail is $180 at Amazon (couldn't find one at Newegg)

There isn't an Ultimate Upgrade OEM, so I can't price that out.

Based on this, I would guess Professional Upgrade to be around $220, about the same for Professional Full OEM.

The Windows 7 prices still seem a bit high to me. Professional is kinda like the old Ultimate and Vista Ultimate originally was priced at $400. Due to low demand, the price dropped significantly. But, I'm pretty sure MS is expecting a better demand for 7, so I don't see them shaving the price for a while. A bigger issue for me is can I use the upgrade media to perform a full install? I don't like upgrading OS's, I'd rather reinstall a clean copy, but with Vista, you had to go through a painful process to perform a clean install of the upgrade version.

Please MS, at least make installing a clean OS with upgrade media a straight forward task.

Honest curiousity here, is there any practical reason for such exorbitant prices? Wouldn't they be making a profit at like 100-150 dollars? I mean, a DVD can't cost more than a couple of dollars to manufacture... I understand that they have to advertise and pay employees and bla bla, but really, anything over 200 seems like too much.

Well, if you believe various technology sources, the cost to develop Vista is somewhere between 6 and 10 Billion dollars. That's a lotta scratch.

On top of the development costs, you still have support costs to maintain the software. Look at XP. It's been around for 7 or 8 years. That's quite a few years of support and salaries to pay.

MS is a publicly traded entity and has a responsibility to its shareholders to maximize profits. MS sets the prices at a point where they expect them to sell. It they don't sell, they drop the price. Look at Vista Ultimate. It started at $400. It can now be had for $235.

Yea but... Bill gates was at the head of MS at that time. He probably just wrote them a check.

:P jk

Bill is awesome.

Anyways, thanks for the explanation. I knew development costs were high, but not that high.

Well, its AN explanation, not the explanation. It is simply an opinion from me. I do think those prices are kinda high. I was hoping for the Professional Upgrade would be around $150 - $170. That to me seems competitive. Home Premium Upgrade at $100-$110 and Starter at $50. I mean, Starter has so many limitations, that $100 is an insult.

We'll see what really happens. We have 6 months at least.

I know those prices will probably not be the correct ones at launch, but even so that is one reason why this pensioner cannot possibly move on to Windows 7 only got Vista in July last year and even though I would have loved to have Ultimate got the Home Premium version installed on this new machine so the upgrade path would be too much for me as well.

Charging absurdly high interest for lending a product because you have a virtual monopoly is however a crime, namely usury.

Their EULA clearly states you only buy the right of use not the product itself. Right of use is normal language Lending. Lending against an outrageous amount is usury.

90 percent of the machines on market come in for professional servicing eventually at some point in their useful life. No supplied OS disk matching the unit and no service. You will need to find a relative whom knows a little bit about computers. End of argument. I've spent 17 years in schools full or partial years after high school graduation, investment probably well over 100 thousand, i need my certifications to work, and the bulk of them are supplied by Microsoft. The tech savvy can probably get buy, the vast majority of the pc using public cannot. Look at it as what MS love to call, the total cost of ownership. That pricing structure though, won't fly, and in the current market, both economics and competitor wise, MS knows that. I expect to see prices significantly lower than predicted.

Hope your right about that. I suspect that, as with most things, they'll be high at first, till the 'I must have now' folks have spent their money, then when sales start to drop, so will the price.

Well, All the guessing is over. Windows 7 Ultimate is selling for $449 Australian now at shops. That is the full edition. I am not going to mess around with updates for the sake of $80. Get real guys. We are having the free use of RC until next June.I will always keep XP Pro on one Hard Drive for some programs. I think W7 is just great. Thank you Mr. Microsoft. Greetings Garry:)

NOONE buys full retail.

There are several reasonable alternatives.

OEM is half the price.

Family packs are resonable.

[Edit]Not everyone needs ultimate (I'm not sure ANYONE needs ultimate :D)[/edit]

And several other avenues if you are a student or a professional...

That being said, MS SHOULD just sell the retail versions for the OEM price and continued the $50/$100 upgrade pricing.

I was ready to jump on the 7 bus after using the beta/rc version for several months and generally liking it.
I decided not to buy 7, in any version, because for my uses it wasn't worth the cost over my already bought and paid for version of XP Pro.
I have absolutely no problems with my xp pro and just aren't willing to plop down what m$ wants for an upgrade op...windows home premium would be my choice for my needs.

Hi Kai Winters and Welcome to SevenForums:)

The only problem your going to have is an 8 year old OS, support is going away in the near future. Pre order for $49 was a great deal. Don't get me wrong i had XP Pro and loved it, but it's time for something new with all the malware, viruses, spam, i just feel alot more comfortable with the latest OS.
