Run As Administrator Question

Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong area for this post, but just need a bit of help with this...

I've just moved to Windows 7 after years of XP (I produce music so never fancied Vista)

I'm now installing my music software and have done this via the (usually hidden) Administrator account, to save having to run all installs as an Administrator from my day-to-day PA level user account.

All software installs and works perfectly under the Admin account, but some of the software doesn't work under the PA account unless I "Run As Administrator". Though I don't mind doing this every time, I'm wondering if there's some other way of installing that would save me having to do this. It would be nice to be able to install the software as an administrator and just run it as a user.

BTW, I have noticed that when you right click on programs, there is a "Run As Administrator" option even in the top level Administrator account - What's the point of this? Does it give you some kind of super-admin privileges?

Hello Andy,

You can use Compatibility Mode on the program with Run this program as an administrator checked.

Not sure why "run as administrator" would be there while logged into the built-in Administrator account.

Try going to Control Panel :ar: User Accounts and move the slider down to Never Notify.

Thanks for your help with that, guys! Have been using the RAA option, but was hoping I could get a solution that didn't involve having to do that. @reghakr - That's what I'm considering, but I'd kinda like notifications in case something unfriendly finds its way onto my PC.

Will continue working on it and post up my findings.

You can always go back in and move the slider to the previous position

Right click the shortcut, select properties, compatibility and tick run as administrator. Never disable UAC, otherwise your security is reduced to XP's level, more or less.

IMHO, I believe if you have goo anti-viruis , spyware detector, and personal firewall, there is no need for UAC

Over the past few days I've tried various combinations of Admin & PA accounts with both Run and Run as Admin (using the Windows 7 backup/restore to work with a few different set-ups that I could swap out)

With many of the VST plug-ins I use, it seems there's no easy way to just install a program and run it (presets are lost, as are soundbanks)

However...

Run as Admin works perfectly, providing the software (VST) installer was also "Run as Admin". So now, as Nikescar suggested, I've permanently enabled the "Run as Admin" from the Compatibility tab.

UAC can sit at the suggested level (I don't mind a prompt when I click to open a program) and I'm happy....

I trust myself much more than MS . I'll take the blame for ignorance rather than the pestering from MS, thank you.

I've seen even the most seasoned Windows IT Pros get taken by malware when UAC was off, when other guys in the same office who left UAC on saw it being caught asking for elevation.

It doesnt matter how good you think you are, there is always a malware author out there that will get you eventually.
