Hi, I am new to this forum so please forgive what might be a really silly question.
I run windows 7 with 64 bit with IE. When I go to "tools" to delete browsing history a message comes up that "internet control panel has stopped working". This shows me " rundll 32.exe.
I have tried to fix with repair tools and by typing sfc/scannow but it reaches 29% and then tells me it cant fix any files.
I really dont know where to go from here. I am new to computers so I would really appreciate help in idiots terms please. thanks jack

Hello Jack and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you run a full scan with your anti-virus of choice? Sometimes malware can cause problems. Even if your anti-virus shows "no malware found" it wouldn't hurt to run a couple more free on-demand scanners. (No anti-malware program is 100% effective 100% of the time so running extra scans is simply added insurance.) Some of the free products recommended here are Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, ESET Online Scanner, and Windows Defender Offline.

If this problem just recently started, you might be able to use System Restore to roll back your computer to an earlier date/time. It's a way to undo changes to your computer without affecting your personal user files, such as e‑mail, documents, photos, etc.

Hi Marsmirar,
Thanks for coming back so quickly. I have run "Superanti spy" and no threats were found.
The "rundll 32. exe" problem has been present for many months whereas my earliest restore point is only one month old. I have run a cleaner, malaware and anti virus but my internet control panel will not function. May I ask whether you have any further thoughts please. Thanks jack.

It might be related to an add-on in Internet Explorer. To check, run the command iexplore.exe -extoff and it will launch and display a message that it's running without add-ons. Now try and delete browsing history and see if it works.

Second thing to try: Close all Internet Explorer windows, go to Control Panel and click Internet Options. Now try from here.

Hi Tookeri, Thanks very much. I went to search programs at start and entered "iexplore" but as soon as I continued the to type further characters the box cleared.
I carried out your second suggestion and up came the caption "deleting browsing history" but then came the message again "internet control panel has stopped working".
To say I am confused is putting it mildly. With my very limited knowlege everything points at "rundll 32.exe." but no matter what I do I cant shift it.
Would really appreciate further ideas please guys. Thanks jack.

Hi Slartybart, Thanks very much for the help. I am new to the world of laptops so only hope I have done everything correctly.
I downloaded SURT and ran that. I then did sfc/scannow and completed 100%. It said some corrupt files.
but couldnt fix all.
The error logs showed an event for today as follows-:
event 1000. Task C. 100. Faulty app name rundll32.exe.inetcol.cpl. version: 6.1.760016385. Time stamp ox4a56c9eo.
I am ashamed to say that I dont yet know how to copy and paste so only hope that I have provided enough info for you. Thanks jack.

Jack,

No need to be ashamed - ask when you don't know or aren't sure. Someone has an answer.
Are you familiar with computers, Windows specifically? Laptop or Desktop doesn't matter - they work the same.

Members will need to see the SFC and SURT logs.
The easiest thing to do is to copy them into a compressed folder (zip) and attach the zip file to a new post here on your thread.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\Windows\Logs

click once on CBS.log, then
hold down the shift key and click on
chksur.log

both should be highlighted, if only one is highlighted then do one at a time

Right click on the highlighted file(s)
choose Send to ...
choose compressed folder

the rest is fairly simple, you need to specify where the compressed folder will be created and what the file name will be.

I suggest creating the folder on your desktop to make it easy to find
the filename cane be anything, but I suggest a name that we both can use to discuss the file if the need arises

jackteet_CBSlog.zip

That works for me, ok with you?
It will (or should) be on your desktop if things go well.

You can attach it to a post by using the paperclip icon on the posting menu
paperclip.png

The 100%, but could not fix some files might only mean that they were in use. I have to look up the messages every time.

Did you restart your machine after running SFC and SURT? Please do.

Bill

Hi Bill, I am really grateful to you for the time and trouble you have taken but frankly the steps you have listed are beyond me and I know when I am beaten. My computer skills are very limited and my knowledge of computer terms is virtually nil. I think this "rundll32" problem is one I shall have to live with.
Thank you once again for all your help; much appreciated. Regards jack.
