Running a program in either OS.

Hi Friends!
Can I run a program installed in a os (in a dual boot system) from the other one?
Being more precise .... can I use Internet download manager or utorrent in both the oss as they will download the same thing continuously if I switch os? :sarc:

It may be that the program is installed in both oss; if I downloaded 40% in xp, may I complete the next 60% in 7? :sarc:

Hello Arc,

Unfortunately, that would be extremely difficult. Basically, the program needs to be installed in each OS. You could install in on any drive you want, but even if you installed it in the D drive, you would still need to install again in the other OS.

Hi Jonathan,
I wanted to know it because the downloads of one os remains idle when the other os is in use. If i install the program in E drive, set the download path to E, and XP in C and 7 in D, both have the program installed, would my issue be solved?

The problem is, no matter where you install the software, you need to add the registry entries to both. The best way to do this is run the installer on both OSes.

why not simply install the software in both OS in a natural way? You can always configure your download files and whatever config files to be in the same place, say in E: in your example. But having two copies of the executable in your system you will not waste too much space, right?

Otherwise Jonathan's right - the registry entries should be there in both OS, unless you are dealing with a self-contained executable that does not need to be installed and can be run from whatever location. I have several programs like this, emacs most notably, but whether there are any download managers of that sort, I am not sure.

with utorrent and many other application you could simply grab the portable version install those softwares in the E:drive partition and your problem is solved.
