Solved Running Windows 7 From USB

I know this is a strange request, but there is a program I use somewhat, but when I install it onto my computer is cause some problems as I have posted here and to the manufactor as well, but no one has the answer for me. So I was thinking, is there away to insert my USB drive into the port, tell the BOIS to book from USB (which my computer can do), and run windowns from it. Then install my program onto the USB and everytime I what to run this one program, it will run from the USB and not my computer?

you'd better install win7 again and use it as dual boot.

You can't run Windows from a USB device. You can install Windows 7 from a flash drive, as many of us do that already, but you can't install to and run from a USB device. The performance would be unusable, even if it would complete.

Okay when I say USB device I mean a flash drive. Sorry about the termology.

That's still included in what I said above. You can't install Windows 7 to a flash drive....just from a flash drive.

Assume you want winxp, vista, win7 all on one computer. winxp in first partition, win7 in second, vista on third.

A boot manager you already have!! it's the win7 bootmanager. You also already have a bootmenu. Since only win7 is there as the only operating system it doesn't display it.

This is just an example.

First thing to do:

• Make a partition somewhat smaller, so shrink it.
• Make a new partition in the created unused space. (30GB is enough when used only for the strange application)
• Install windows the normal way in that partition

It will update the bootmenu automatically. Will send you links later

4. Click on the Install now button. (See screenshot below)

5. When you get to this point, select the partition (step 2) or hard drive to install Windows 7 on. (See screenshot below)

6. Finish installing Windows 7.
NOTE: You would do step 9 on at that link to finish installing Windows 7.

7. When finished, restart the computer to have the option to boot Win7 old (Earlier Verision of Windows) or Windows 7. (See screenshot below)

Kaktussoft - Just two question. Wouldn't it be easier to make a VHD (If this is the correct term for it)? If not then everytime I go to turn on my computer I guess I have to answer that question then right?

Every time you switch on computer you have to answer which OS to start. You can modify timeout from 30sec to 2 secs. After that timeout the default OS boots.

You can:

• modify bootmenu timeout value
• modify default boot entry
• modify the name in the boot menu

VHD isn't the way to go!! It doesn't work in win7 home premium and configuring / booting from vhd is difficult. You will have a bootmenu anyways

Yes, it is possible.

It is quite complicated - you need to install windows 7 onto a vhd which goes onto the usb stick.

To allow windows 7 to boot from usb, you need to make a couple of registry changes.

Lots of advanced enthusiasts have been doing it - but it is not something the average user - or even the above average user would be able to do.

When I make this new partation and get windows setup, do I need to reload in all the DELL Drivers? O by the way, I'm using Windows 7 Pro, not home. Just FYI.

Kaktussoft - Okay, let me tell you where I'm at in this process. I figure I would have to add in all the device drivers, so I did that. With that being said you guess I'm up to the point now where I need to change the boot order. The system boots up the new system first, which I don't want. Tell me what you need for me to take a picture of and I'll send it so you can tell me what the command line is. Thanks.

Nevermind I figured it out. Only had to type in misconfig and click on the boot tab and did it there. Now I'm off to load in the rest of the stuff. I might be coming across a problem later on down the road, but I'll let you know if I do.

If you had or have a problem with running a program in Windows 7, how did making a dual boot set up solve it ? Unless I`m reading you wrong.

Are both called "Windows 7"? Or is it easy for anyone to see what is what
