Russia has MS sourcecode

I don't know if anyone here remembers the Commodore 64 computer. But back in the day there were whole clubs (mostly kids) dedicated to copying and sharing Copyrighted software.

I was never part of any 'club' but the C-64 certainly did introduce me to 'freeware'...

DrWho, same thing existed for Atari. I went to one of those club meetings with a guy who was a member. I thought they were too geeky for me to join. Only went once. A few people were into things other than pirated software, but everyone else (like me) just wanted to see who had a new supply of games.

In that day, (early '80's) I joined every Commodore club within a hundred miles of home. I'd do a little presentation at a club meeting, showing my custom made Kernel ROM and my 1541 disk drive enhancements. Almost every person would want the same things done to their own C-64. My hobby became a real money making business. I burned my own custom Kernel ROM's and sold them nation wide.

That was a fun time. With "Fast Hack'em" and a few other programs, games from Electronic Arts and other companies became "Freeware".
Gads, I loved that little C-64. It could do things that even the mighty IBM PC couldn't do.

But today we don't have computer clubs where software is copied.....we have web sites that share software with the whole world. How times have changed.
Want something? Just download it!
I'm absolutely not advocating piracy.....I'm just saying that it certainly does exist.

It's probably true to some extent, but that article is sensationalist at best...

Microsoft has shared the source with tons of governments and private industry partners in part or whole. In fact they made a pretty big deal about it when they started their "Shared Source Initiative" some time ago in an attempt to balance the need to be more open while not allowing the commercial fragmentation of the OS.

And Governments pretty much demand access to the source to ensure that AMERICA is not spying on /them/ through their use of Windows :)

Microsoft can probably spy on anyone using the software if they wanted to, Im sure not all details are released. No one knows what microsoft is hiding and what they are keeping secret from the public if there is anything significant at all.

According to my source, fseal is pretty much right. Microsoft does share some of the source code with governments. However, unlike what the article suggests, MS apparently does not share the whole core code. And this is nothing new; it has been ongoing.

Microsoft is not very bright hiring someone like that anyway, just the fact that he is an immigrant should throw red flags up in my opinion. Not saying that they cant hire them, but they should have to go through extensive screening for reasons just like this. Seems like common sense to me.

If you ever visit the MS campus you will see lots of folks from all over the world. This particular individual was not in a high level job and certainly did not have access to very much coding, development, or even marketing information. Don't forget that MS has offices in various locations around the world.

Not at all, but if governments are worried about Microsoft spying on them, Microsoft should be just as worried if there getting spied on for the sake of there company and our country. To my knownledge russia kinda has a reputation for spying on the US and probably other countries as well. How would an extensive background check hurt anything? It would only prevent things just like this from happening i would think.

Lets say a company like microsoft was based in a country like russia for china...especially china. Do you think they would let any american immigrant come in and work for them without being properly screened.

He also admitted to being and illegal immagrant, i cant believe they cant find that out before they hired him, makes no sense to me....

It's absurd that people would suddenly believe Russia would use that code for hacking or espionage purposes...

I think its absurd you acutally think that.

Have you ever heard of the cold war? It wasnt really that long ago...

You think Russia doesnt spy anymore? What country doesnt have its spies and spy tactics?

Fiji. LOL.

No, but you're right. Every major country engages in espionage. The USSR may be history, but Putin still reigns there.

Im sorry if i offended you kari, however your comments i find offensive as well, Just because i believe that an immagrant should be screened before being hired at a company like Microsoft makes me narrow minded and biassed? really?

Did i forget to mention that this guy was here illegally in the first place?

FYI , screening of US citizens in the same manor would be perfectly fine with me. I have nothing against people from other countries, but when the US is in the cross hairs of many other counties both financially and technolgy wise I think we should take proper precautions to protect ourselves.

Don't know why everybody is so shocked, how hard can it be for a very tech savvy organisation with a huge resource to actually reverse engineer MS products to get the source code? Hackers and virus writers do it all the time and that is why Linux users will tell you that MS products are so full of malware.

Do you also think as well that the PC's that are used at NASA, The pentagon MI5 etc. will use a normal MS OS? I don't think they would, I think they will use their own bespoke OS's.

EDIT: And to also add to this, hasn't the EU as well as USA courts ordered MS to release it's source code to it's competators so they can write software for their own use?

No, not "normal," but probably highly customized version of Windows. Not only that but between their sophisticated networking and they encrypt just about everything, they stay fairly secure. Most if their breaches are from people losing stuff that is decrypted.

Occasionally someone will bring in viruses and unintended consequences.

For example, the fellow that brought the USB disk that was infected. They lifted the ban this year:
