Hi everyone, I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and had Safari installed since I got my retail copy of Windows last month. It had performed well until a few days ago, that every time I tried to launch it would try to start but started failing. Curiously, it always shows as runnning in Processes, but it doesn't show on screen. At the beginning, I would restart the pc and the first launch would be succesful, but after closing and trying again it just wouldn't launch at all and it was always showing runnning in Processes. I have no idea what it could cause this, I thought it would be my firewall ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, but I have tried starting Safari with ZoneAlarm off and the result is the same. I uninstalled it today and downloaded the latest version and it runs ok at the beginning or first run only, it keeps repeating the same behavior plus it also brings up UAC warning asking for permission to run it. It still shows as a running process too.
I would like to know what solution I could use for this as I want Safari to be my main browser. I also have Chrome, Firefox and IE and they all work ok.

Lets get things working again, and then we can try to assure that it will not happen again. With either system image or system restore, go back to a time when everything was working properly. At that point, come back and lets discuss what you should do, if you want to make changes.

But how far will I have to go in System Restore as I only have installed the firewall and maybe one or two more programs and nothing else? I noticed the changes about 10 days ago...
Another thing I noticed now and noticed when I had Vista before is that when I have IE and Chrome open something weird happens with Chrome and the system; I type anything in Chrome and it changes the keyboard configuration, but not to another language, only a mess of characters. I have to close IE to type properly in Chrome and the rest of the system.

Go back at least 15 days, since you had the problem about 10 days ago. Be sure that you go to a point prior to the problem

OK. But if I go back that far and don't install the programs I installed during that time how can I tell what or which is the one that affected my system and what can I do to avoid that as I need some of the programs to make the pc work ok.

Once your system is working the way you want it, take the potentially problem programs and install one at a time and use it for a while. When you get to the problem program, uninstall or use system restore to remove it (my favorite way). So make sure when you install the programs again, you make an restore point prior to instalation.

Which method is better: System Restore or Backup?

Back up, will affect only your document, not programs. If you want to affect the programs, you must use system restore. Your personal information will not be affected with system restore ie, documents, pics etc,

OK. But if I go back that far and don't install the programs I installed during that time how can I tell what or which is the one that affected my system and what can I do to avoid that as I need some of the programs to make the pc work ok.

OK, I tried System Restore and it came up with a familiar problem: System Restore did not complete successfully.Your computer's system files and setting were not changed. Probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer.
I have ZoneAlamar Extreme Security, I disabled it from startup thinking this way it wouldn't interfere with the Restore process. What should I do? Uninstal it and then try System Restore?

I dont think that you have to uninstall, at this point. Just make sure that it is off and try system restore again. Turn off your fire wall too. Without protection, make sure you are not online.

Finally managed to do the Restore after searching online. I had to do it in Safe Mode as there was no other way to make Zone Alarm would allow System Restore to work properly.
So far most of the basic programs are working ok and Safari seems to launch properly again and there is no mess in the keyboard layout when typing with more than one browser and other programs open. But won't be sure yet as I have to install most Windows updates and other applications I need for everyday use.
Just wanted to know what could have caused this. I am inclined to think it is related to the installation of Zone Alarm but I could see why or how. Is there a way to find or see when my registry is being changed or a way to protect it from being affected by a firewall/antivirus program?

Install one program at a time, use it and be sure that is not the problem. Then install the next.

Unless your are truly in love with your A/V and firewall, change it. You feel that it may be the cause of the problem, and yet these things are necesssary. I suggest you do one of two things.

1 Change your A/V, to one that is know to be compatible with Win 7, I suggest MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free from the Microsoft site and is a combined Firewall and A/V. Its know to work with 7, many are using it.

2 If you want to keep what you have. I would suggest that you start a new Post, the security section of this forum

Whatever, you decide I am glad that I was able to be of help. Most of all enjoy.
Richard
