Everything you need to know for Friday's big asteroid flyby

In less than 24 hours, a 150 foot-wide asteroid will complete a remarkably close but safe flyby. For weeks, scientists have been tracking the path of the small near-Earth asteroid known as 2012 DA14, which is on course to swing by the Earth on Friday at 2:24 p.m. EST/11:24 a.m. PST.

Again, no need for panic about a collision with Earth, which would be, in a word, catastrophic. If a space rock of this magnitude crashed into us, scientists say that it would release about 2.5 megatons of energy in the atmosphere. The last time an asteroid this since smacked into the Earth was in 1908 in Tuguska, Siberia. That rock, which actually was a bit smaller than 2012 DA14, took out about 750 square miles of forest near what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia.

Still, the uniqueness of this event promises to be a major news event as 2012 DA14 will pass inside the band of weather and communications satellites which orbit the earth, some 22,200 miles above the planet's surface. At its closest point, the flyby will get as close as 17,150 miles above the Earth and constitute the closest approach for a known object of this size.

• At it nearest point, the asteroid will be over the eastern Indian Ocean, off the island of Sumatra.

I have been supposing an asteroid traveling so fast it could enter our atmosphere and pass on through without impact. At a high enough altitude it would not get hot enough to explode or burn up. Imagine the sonic boom that would make. And a good show.

Before, during, and after its encounter with Earth.

My thoughts, and prayers go out to, not only to those people in the Chelyabinsk region, but for all of us.

Unbelievable (errrr, no, very believable!) comment from Russian nationalist leader, in the article:

"Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the nationalist leader noted for vehement statements, said "It's not meteors falling, it's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency reported."

Update at 9:50 a.m. ET. NASA Scientist Concurs; No Connection To Asteroid:

"The meteor explosion over Russia ... was not caused by an asteroid zooming close by the Earth today (Feb.15), a NASA scientist says.

NASA asteroid expert Don Yeomans, head of the agency's Near-Earth Object Program Office, told SPACE.com that the object which exploded over a thinly inhabited stretch of eastern Europe today was most likely an exploding fireball known as a bolide."

A bit disconcerting, even humbling, that while we were all watching for the big one, a little one got through and caused some fear and damage. A little like watching for your opponents right cross, only to be stung and reminded that he's got a good left jab. Those people in Russia certainly saw the light. Hope no one was badly hurt or had a cardiac event.

In a follow up from a remark I made earlier in this thread:

Hale-Bopp, what can I say...I watched that for two months in the Northwest for hours. It is still visible in the largest telescopes after 16years. If I can find it there is a pic of it, and I'll post it.

First some corrections to that quote.

1. The latest image (2000) I can find is here: Comet Hale-Bopp Home Page (JPL)
2. There is imaging in 2001 from the La Silla Telescope in Chile, those pictures are elusive. But,
3. The latest for Hubble was in 2009.
4. The Herschel Space Telescope has taken PACS images of Hale-Bopp in 2010
5. The VLT in 2011.
6. That makes the latest 14years.
