Solved Same update appears & installs every time I turn off pc.

First let me say I’m not at all computer savvy, so keep that in mind when responding. Two weeks ago I attempted to install an older program onto this new computer. Once installed, I used this older program’s “update” function and I got an error message that I didn’t record. I attempted the installation a couple more times with similar results. Shortly thereafter I noticed two problems:

#1 - In the lower right hand corner of the desktop a message appeared: “Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine.” I ran my virus protection, ESET NOD 32, and it should no problems. I then restored to a time before I attempted the installation of this program and this message has since gone away, so this problem seems to have been resolved.

#2 – However the 2nd problem has persisted where every time I turn off the computer I’m advised it needs to do 1 update and it’s always the same update, (Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB954430) - 5.4 MB). When I turn the computer on again it and check for updates it will show this same update again. When I click “install updates” it installs it and I get the message of “Updates successfully installed”, however when I close the screen and again check for updates the same update is waiting to be installed. I tried the “Fix It” feature without success. I'm not getting any error codes to share with you. Thanks - Mike

There is no problem with Activation/validation showing in your MGADiag report.....


Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.


Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

I did the check disk and restarted and signed back on. Was there supposed to be something I see happening? I ask because I don't hear the computer making any noise which would normally indicate it was doing something.

I went back and did another check disk. The instructions said I would be told the drive is locked but cp said it it cannot lock the current drive. It said "The type of file system is NTSF cannot lock current drive. CHKDSK can't run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to be checked the next time the system reboots? Y/N"

So I entered yes and this time upon restarting it did go into the check disk mode and it is still running. So once it's finished I will compress it and continue on with your instructions. Thanks Noel. -Mike (I'm sending this from my laptop)

I'm not sure I did this correctly since the date of the log was the 19th when it should have been the 20th. Additionally the CBS log address could not find anything once I added the 2nd \CBS.

You uploaded a shortcut to the file, rather than the file itself :)
The Folder is C:\Windows\Logs\CBS - navigate there in Windows Explorer and right-click on the file and select Copy
now click on an empty area of the desktop, and select Paste
the file should appear
right click in it and select Send to > Compressed folder and attach it to your response.

I too have had the same problems since last Wednesday when Microsoft issued 7 important updates.... Each evening when I shut down, I'm informed there are updates to install and to not turn off etc etc...
Each morning, my computer starts to configure said updtaes, only to get to the end and inform me 'Failed to install, reverting process.....
I ran microsoft's 'FixIt' and the updates disappeared from the hidden task bar.
Next shut down, it started all over again :-(
This morning however, the comp rebooted before it could configure them, then tried twice to configure the updates ,(now eight important ones), each time reverting the process before restarting without the updated files????
That process lasted 15 minutes!!!
I have a reasonable understanding of computers.... so if I'm required to send info, I'll do my best?

The scan didn't find any problems - but there's a lot of data outside the scan that's a little worrying.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.

Look in the Installed Updates listing for KB954430 - if you find it, uninstall it and reboot.
then do a Check for Updates again, and try the install.
see if that sorts it out
