I have successfully installed the same update KB2467175 at least five times and it continues to appear as an important update that should be downloaded and installed. What's up with this?

Hi,
Tried your suggestion but it didn't work. Gave error: "Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\."
My internet connection was active. Can you suggest any other fixes? Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Glen

I solved it! I’m on Windows 7 32 bit.
For me, this problem became a bigger problem when I could not install Nero10 which wanted to use the right C++2005 Redistributable. So the suggestion to just hide the update is not sufficient.
Here's how I solved it:
Elesewhere it is often suggested to try and install the update manually. This always ended in failure with the update asking me to specify the right path to the update and never accepting it.
Then I noted there are several versions of the vcredist_x86.exe around. The one that worked for me is the 6.0.3790 that I found here:
Download Confirmation - Microsoft Download Center :D
Just to be complete, I also found a v. 6.0.2900 that didn’t work which is here:
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update
so don’t download that. :sarc:
Try to just install the 6.0.3790 first, maybe this is just a better or bugless update. If that doesn’t work, well, here’s what I did just before that:
In the Windows uninstall software page (not on the installed updates page) you will find one or more Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 updates (and 2008). I tried uninstalling the 2005 ones (we’ll put them back later) , and then again the resource not found error came up, making it impossible to uninstall.
Then, with Tune up Utilities 2010, I was able to just kick the entry from the installed software list. Ashampoo Uninstaller and some other utilities also have the option to get something off the list if you cannot uninstall them. It just scratches the entry in some way. Possibly some regedit hack could do it too.
After this and a reboot to make sure, I was able to install the 6.0.3790 update found on the first link above. From there on, windows update will pick up any updating and reinstalling of the redistributables that is left to do. And after that Nero10 installed fine as well.
I hope this works for some people and saves you time. If it works please post something in response(thanks?) I would appreciate and enjoy that!

Greets,
Dreamtreater

 Tried it twice - still no joy! It was this update you were referring to (KB2538242)? I hope.
I'll hide the update, 'though it troubles me (especially as I don't know what its all about), when I see 'important' attached to it.

Perhaps I went to the wrong thread?

Okay.
I got a message back from Niemiro. He is very busy today but he has a suggestion.

As you may or may not know Win7 64bit is actually 32bit and 64bit together.
The point is BOTH Visual C++ downloads are used and it could be either the 32bit or the 64bit causing problems.
Normally with the Automatic Updater it installs both versions on some software and the Visual C++ is one of them.

According Niemiro others have had the problem also so his suggestion is to manually download the 32bit first then the 64bit.
This has corrected the problem for many.

Go back to this link > Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update

Do only one at a time.

Download and install this one first.
vcredist_x86.EXE This is for 32bit.

Then go for this one.
vcredist_x64.EXE This is for 64bit.

Restart if prompted and all that good stuff.

Do not get discouraged until you do both.

Let me know if it works.

If not Niemiro or Mowgreen will get to you eventually but it may be a day or two.
We are all volunteer and they have jobs and school so are here when they have time.
I am retired so I am usually around. ;) :D

Thanks for that , I hate to get ahead of myself but that download shield has not popped up in the shut down box.
I knew that it was a dual 32/64 bit system (and had I mentioned that, would perhaps made your problem solving easier) sorry about that - I in my ignorance still dont understand computers. At least, assuming this has been corrected, it makes sense as to why the update was not accepted?

If you dont hear from me again (on this matter) it works

Many thanks

Pip

All Win7 64bit have have 32bit in them.

Normally, 99.99999% of the time, both versions are not needed to be downloaded and installed seperately. The 64 bit would have both 64bit and 32bit components of the Visual C++.
The Visual C++ 32bit is just 32bit.

Some people are needing to install both to get it to work.
It is an update that wants to be contrary for some people.

Neither of us messed up. The update just wants to be difficult- which happens sometimes. :D

I'm picking up on this thread to take advantage of what's already been written, and to say that I still have the problem. The manual install hangs at a certain x86 module, regardless of which bit version I am installing. I came across an MS article that advised using Safe Mode for problem installations, which I'd love to do, except SM does not support installations. I've had this update floating around my tasktray for three months now.

I hope you folks got all this worked out, I'm not sure. I have a thought, Windows 7 was not designed to fight Nero 10, Tune up utility 2010, Asham Pro, and what ever woppy do programs out there just to do it's job. Their are very few 3rd party programs needed or desired by Windows 7 to do it's job, IMHO. With older systems it was that way but not with Windows 7. I got rid of Nero years ago because I got tired of fighting with it. When reading through all the post here you will find some 3rd party programs many use and work well with Windows 7, take note of them. I don't think you will find any tune up programs that many use. This is not meant to be mean, just honest and useful. I know this post will have some kicking me in the gumbagas; just let Windows 7 be Windows 7 and you will like it.
PS. medication chased down with 5 cups of coffee and still going strong. Me not Windows 7. Good night, my cat has the 12 dark to 4:00 watch.

@Layback:

Your advice is sound.

The problem is that most people don't have a ready source of information at hand to inform them of this BEFORE there is a problem.

I love this site, it's great but I really wish that there were a few very visible pointers about Win 7 that were prominently displayed on the main page here.

I know Brink doesn't seem interested in doing that but maybe if enough people continue to have these issues he might reconsider it in the future.

That said it would be nice if MS got this point across to Win 7 users before this forum had to deal with it.

Note to MS. I and others will gladly put up with a few force read and acknowledge pages upon set up of Win 7 so that stuff like this can be dealt with before it becomes a problem.

Well their is kind of a list. One has to read a lot on this site. You will then learn the posters you like and have a lot of trust in. Over time you will learn what is recommended to do and not to do. Then if you have questions more research can be done. I don't think new people would read it anyway. Many of them haven't read the part about filling out My System Specs.

I think it's a safe bet that some third party program has its hand in this. But I don't see that changing any time soon. It would be great to do the install in Safe Mode, but there must be some reason that's not possible, by design. Lacking that, I could uncheck all my Startup items, install, and then recheck them. But that is a pain, and carries no guarantees. I wish there were some way to export the startup settings, then reimport them later.

Any time their is a Tune Up tool installed you can bet money the program is messing with the registry. That normally does more harm than good. In msconfig/start up I only have my mouse, keyboard, and MSE checked. If I new my blue tooth mouse/keyboard would work I would un-check them.
