I've come pretty late to the SSD game and just purchased my first one, and I wanted to check that the performance results I'm getting are correct for the drive. From what I can see I don't seem to be getting all I should be from it, but I also have a pretty old setup (which I'm intending to upgrade), and I'm not sure if that's what's holding it back.

My CrystalDiskMark results with Rapid Mode enabled are:
Seq Q32T1 Read: 1471 Write: 1762
4K Q32T1 Read: 462.9 Write: 387.3
Seq Read: 671.4 Write: 570
4K Read: 64.19 Write: 361.1

My system is:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel i7-950 3.07ghz (1st Generation)
Asus P6TD Deluxe
Sapphire Radeon HD 6800 Series
4GB DDR3
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W ATX PSU

Could anyone shed any light on this? And if it is an issue with old components, does anyone have any recommendations for replacements that won't break the bank?

Many thanks,
Linc

You're getting respectable results from a motherboard of that vintage. The reason why you aren't getting the stellar numbers that you might be expecting is that you have a SATA II interface to your hard disks, which only runs at 3 Gb/s. Newer SATA III ports run at 6 Gb/s - double the speed.

If you want to take full advantage of the speed of that drive, you would need a newer motherboard with a SATA III interface. However, that would probably require you to buy a new processor as well, since the socket on your current one might be hard to find, because it's a little older. (But I'm not an Intel expert)

All in all though, the performance on your SSD is still much better than the HDD equivalent. I wouldn't do a full upgrade just for that if the money is tight right now. You can always carry most of your components over if you do save for an upgrade later. Just a thought.

I'll let the Intel experts advise you on suitable components for an upgrade. :)

Ah, that explains it then, thank you for letting me know. I'm glad it's not a problem with the drive! I'd heard quite a few unhappy rumblings about the 850 evo and was getting concerned.

Happily I've just been paid for a job recently, so I'm toying with the idea of a proper upgrade. That's probably a topic for the PC Builds subforum though - although if anyone has any suggestions here they'd be much appreciated. I'll do some research and post in the custom builds section.

Thanks again :)
