Sandy bridge or Ivy Bridge you decide :)

Hi I am about to purchase new motherboard and Processor and I require some opinion whether I should buy Sandy bridge or Ivy Bridge. As far as I know Ivy is having some overheating issue and that for me is worrying fact since I want to overclock my processor.

Furthermore if I do buy Sand Bridge what chipset/ motherboard combination should I go with Z68 or Z77.

Go for Sandy Bridge..

A tried and tested i5 2500k or i7 2600k is still very respectable and the performance gulf between Sandy and Ivy is not that large... Ivy is great if you want a very respectable integrated graphics solution; the Intel HD 4000 is quite a performer for an integrated card.

2500k's hit 4.5 GHz or even 5 GHz very easily with the right cooling apparatus...

Also, go for Z68 if you intend on sticking with Sandy Bridge until your next motherboard upgrade, Z77 if you intend on upgrading to Ivy Bridge in the near future...

Hi thx for a fast reply and yes you are right Sandy bridge has gone through test phase and provides decent performance. I would like to know if there be any problems if I were to buy Z77 with core i5 2500k. I won't be upgrading to Ivy because I will be using Sandy bridge for the next 3 or 4 years and by then different processors will be out however if you could please do tell me if Z77 will work or you think Z68 performance better with Sandy bridge.

Hmm..

It seems like the only main difference between Z77 and Z68 is that Z77 has native USB 3.0 support.

Z77 also drops the legacy PCI bus, so if you have any older PCI devices you might want to go with Z68 instead.

Other than that, it seems like the performance and overclocking limits are the about the same on both the Z68 and the Z77...

In conclusion, you have to decide whether native USB 3.0 support and legacy PCI devices are important to you to make that final choice.

EDIT:- Read that second review I linked to, it has loads of great information into how the Z77 performs with Sandy Bridge CPU chips...

Sandy Bridge overclocks a bit better.

Ivy Bridge has a few extra features that may not matter to you and probably uses a bit less power.

Ivy Bridge has better integrated graphics and may be faster for video transcoding.

Ivy Bridge probably will run hotter if heavily overclocked.

Ok thx guys I decided with core i5 2500k and Z77 Motherboard and slap on corsair H60 water cooler on the CPU and it should overclock with ease.
