SATA 6 Gb/s to SATA 1.5 Gb/s possible or not?

I wish to replace my old laptop hdd...

Do you actually bought the SATA 3 disk or just planning to buy it ?.

I was on the verge of buying it when the HGST support team told me that my laptop's motherboard may not support it and it may require downgradation from sata 6 Gbps to Sata 1.5 Gbps.
Can you tell for sure that this system will support it:
CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo [email protected] GHz
Ram:4GB
Motherboard:Lenovo 2743A92
HDD:WD2500BEVS (250 GB)
Also both the drives have identical dimensions.

My dear friend, you seems to be worrying about an issue which doesn't exist. I can't grantee that disk will work with your system but most likely it will. However i don't see any point in buying a SATA 3 disk and using it with reduced SATA 2 or SATA 1 speed. But i can definitely guarantee that any SATA 2 HDD will work with your machine. Why don't you just buy a SATA 2 disk and stop worrying about jumpers and other things ?. A SATA 2 disk will also work with most of the SATA 1 chipsets ( except some VIA controllers ) and supports auto speed negotiation.

I was interested in this(HTS721010A9E630) hdd mainly because it was 7200 rpm hard drive. Can you please recommend a good 7200 rpm hdd with sata 2 in the similar price range as the one i have mentioned. Or should i go ahead and take the risk with this one(HTS721010A9E630-good benchmark results)

Your board according to Lenovo:

Laptops and netbooks :: ThinkPad SL Series laptops :: ThinkPad SL400 :: 2743 :: A92 - Lenovo Support (CA)

WAy down this listing indicates the board operates natively with SATA 2 or 3.0Gbps so there really shouldn't be an issue with a larger SATA 3 or 6.0 Gbps drive. As it seems to be an intel chipset using ICH9M and according to this thread here:

T400 SATA interface speed and SSD - Lenovo Community

If there is an issue it should downgrade in speed, otherwise SATA II.

It occurs to me that The largest listed drive size for your maschine is 320GB. The size of your intended replacement could well cause an issue due to no 1TB drives existing in 2008 when the chipset was finalized. Me? I would go for a 320GB as they can still be found.
