I currently have a Dell XPS 420, with a Sata HD. I plan to buy an external HD. If I buy a SATA, with SATA cables, can I just plug the cable into the computer? Is there a port, to connect the e SATA cable, similar to USB?

Yes, desktop. Has SATA HD, and a port for high speed Data Devices such as cameras and external storage devices (is this E SATA port)? If this is the E SATA port, I will assume that I can use the HD for the Window 7 OS.

I would check with Dell to be sure. Im sure its sata compliant but that high speed data port may be firewire. CHeck the user manual. Can an external sata drive be used for the OS. Yes But.
