Hi,

The save as/open dialogue box is not opening in any of the programs on my laptop. I use a Asus PEM 1015 with a Intel Atom N550 processor and Windows 7 starter edition.

The save as/open dialog box does not open in any of the programs including all office products, chrome, firefox, paint etc. The program crashes when I try to save as/open any file.

I am not really very good at technical things, so don't know how to put up an error report detailing what the problem is.

However, I searched the forums and found this solution to my problems,

Click on Start button, in Search box type regedit and click on the regedit icon in the search results. Navigate to the following key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data

(That number might be 12.0 or 11.0 or 10.0 depending on which version of Office you have installed). Then do the following.

  1. Click Data, then click Export on the File menu.
  2. Name the file Windata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
  3. Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes.
  4. Exit Registry Editor.
  5. Now test whether the crash happens again.

It worked, but only for a day. The problem is back, and now repeating the above steps also do not help.

(I have also tried an SFC/Scannow. But it always stops at 21%.)

Please advice.

Thanks a lot.

If the scan stops, there's something wrong with the OS. What error message is displayed when it fails?

I followed the steps mentioned, but the .txt file was empty, and was a 0kb file. To be sure, I deleted it, and followed the steps again. Still the same.

But maybe I'm just a moron who doesn't get these things, so still I tried to attach the file here, but it says upload failed.

I tried to upload the CBS.log file, in case that might help, but that upload also failed.

(I cannot open the upload dialog, so i just drag and drop the attachment in the manage attachments page and then once it is selected, click upload.

Ok, perform another sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt. When it fails, just go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and see how large the cbs.log file is.

Ok, now just copy it and paste it on your desktop. Once you do that, you can open it with notepad.

Can you boot into safe mode and try to do another sfc /scannow?

I scanned my computer multiple times, and the only problem it shows is:

comdlg32.dll.mui could not be scanned because of I/O device error (1117)
