I had two drives one of which was 64bit and the other 32.The 64 drive is kaput but i made a windows backup system image and saved it to my external drive. i now boot to the 32bit drive and have installed another drive.
The questions is can i install the back up 64 bit image to my new drive and if so how?

or i have a w7 64 bit iso file,i have copied it to my usb flash drive how do i make that bootable?
I am runnig a w7 32 bit at the moment but have 2 other drives i could install the 64 operating system to.
If i disconnect the w7 32 bit and boot from cd with iso file on it will this then allow me to install it to the other hard drive?

Do I understand correct, you had a faulty PHYSICAL drive and replaced that drive with a healthy drive? New drive is NOT smaller than faulty drive?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31541-windows-7-usb-dvd-download-tool.html to copy the (extact) ISO to USB flash to make it bootable. Of course change BIOS settings to set first boot device as USB

Correct the faulty drive has been replaced with another drive healthy and is not smaller than previous drive.

Win7 system image expects the same partition layout when restoring. Since it's a new drive... the partition layout is different. Windows restore will clean the disk (remove everything) and recreate the disk layout as it was.

Just for clarification origanally i had two drives 64 bit w7 and 32 bit w7.
I had them both bootable and w7 64bit was the one i used.
The drive with 64bit became corrupted.
I then set 32 bit to become the default drive.
I removed the 64 bit drive and replaced it with a 500gb drive.
I now have C drive boots to w7 32 bit and another empty drive.
I have an iso 64bit w7 which i want to install onto the empty drive and make it bootable.
I then hope once this is done to restore a windows backup image i have of my previous 64bit system.

But how did you force to boot win7 32bit or 64bit? Did you simply force bios to boot from drive 1 or 2, or did you have a win7 bootmenu?

msconfig, boot options set default boot and time to show boot options on the screen.

So win7 64 is still in bootmenu? Delete that entry ... can be done in same msconfig screen.

On external disk.. goto \WindowsImageBackup\<ServerName>\<Backup datetime>
What <guid name>.vhd do you see (1, 2 or 3)? What are the size of vhd files?

i have to go to work and will look at this when im finished, thanks for your imput

I deleted some of my posts. I thought new drive was smaller, didn't read it well. Steps you have to do:

  1. #4 and test if it can boot from usb flash drive. If so, shutdown and power off.
  2. Disconnect 32bits drive form system (just to be sure)
  3. Boot from usb flash and do the System Image Recovery
  4. Now boot normally. Post results.
I think step 1 to 3 aren't needed at all. Maybe http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html "repair you recomputer"-> System Image Recovery works as well. Be sure to restore to new disk!

So i have made the usb bootable and copied the iso to the usb and successfully installed the 64bit onto the other drive. :D
I cannot get the windows back up image from the previous drive 64bit that is saved on an external drive
to install,so i may just leave the clean 64 bit install as it is and have to like and lump it.
I am at least back to my previous set up : i can boot to either 32 bit or 64 bit windows at start but have 64 bit as the default.

You shouldn't do install... but do "windows image recovery" instead.
