Saving e-mail pictures - Where is "save as"

With XP, I recall that I could always right click on any e-mail pic, even if it was embedded in the email (not an attachment), and I could choose "save as" from the drop down menu. In Win 7, I only get an option of "copy".... With "save as", it took about 2 seconds to save a single pic, or a collection of pics, efficiently and wherever desired on the hard drive. With "copy" it takes 10x that long. I have to copy each pic individually, then open and paste that photo into a photo editing program (i.e. Paint); from there it has to be exported through the "save as" function to an export destination.

Hi zzzimba, and welcome to sevenforums if nobody else has said it.

I use Outlook 2007 and I see a "Save As..." for attachments. What mail program are you using?

(An alternative would be to drag the attachment to the desktop and work on it from there.)

I am using Outlook 2007 also in Win 7. You indicated that you see "save as" for "attachments". While that is generally the case for me also, I indicated in my post that I am having difficulties with "save as" for embedded pictures, the "non-attachment" style of pics. I tried your suggection of dragging these pics to the desktop and they ain't moving nor or they responding to my command to do so.

Please re-read my query and I look forward to all input.

Sorry for the delay in responding - Real Life interrupted.

I looked around, and there is no joy on the embedded picture front. The method you are using appears to be the only one, according to this Microsoft KB article: The "Save Picture As" command is not present when you right-click an image in an HTML e-mail message in Outlook 2007 .

An alternative is to use the "snipping tool" and copy it off that way.

Wow, thanks for that link. It seems to directly address my query. I am not familiar with the "snipping tool". But I think you understand my dilemma now. Let's say I receive several e-mails every day and they contain a dozen artistic pictures that I want to add to my pic collection. Is there any way to save them directly (especially as a one click grouping - highlight all and then "save as") to the hard drive with a few clicks of the mouse... instead of 50 - 100 clicks of the mouse? Anything would be an improvement on having to copy each e-mail picture individually into a photo editing program and then export it to its destination. Geeeez!

Am I crazy or can any one confirm who is still running XP that this problem is unique to Win 7?

My Win 7 bitch list is growing longer every day but between this issue, the inability to disable auto-arrange for free sorting icons, and especially pictures in a folder.. add to that the fact that e-mails with large attachments (MP3 files/videos) get stuck in the Outlook outbox looping over and over trying to send, but actually never going anywhere and jamming the Outlook program and gobbling up valuable proceeds assets, and without ever being able to be deleted without some major hacks that I discovered on-line... This has all left me feeling that Win 7 has set back XP by about a decade, and with no real benefits that come to mind. Real friends would not let their friends purchase Win 7. I wish it had been around long enough when I got stuck with it on a new laptop that someone could have warned me! It's left me really missing XP and wondering why some new company is not designing a better OS and displacing MS from the marketplace in this day in age. It wouldn't be hard to do. PS- I tried Mac for a few months last year and sorry to say, I was a little underwhelmed, especially when trying to convert 15 years of my life's data between platforms, it proved too challenging. Oh well, If I was starting from scratch I'd probably pick a Mac.....

Anywayz, any thoughts on how to make the most of this latest in a series of MS blunders would be most appreciated.

I haven't looked into this at all, but I assume there is a way to edit the right click context menu for Outlook in the registry. Find the corresponding registry key, and you should be able to add "save as" to it. I'll see if I can come up with something.

Until I find the right registry directory to edit the context menu, you can view the e-mail in your web browser, and save the image(s) from there. See this article: CLICK ME

Additionaly, if you have a pop-3 account with a web server you can view the mail from there. For instance, I have a pop-3 account set up through Gmail [which is free by the way] and when I view my e-mail there I can right click and "save as" any image in the mail. I know this isn't a perfect solution, but at least a temporary one until I find a registry hack to suit your needs.

The link you shared provided a very creative workaround and I played with it quit a bit. Unfortunately it also is a fairly complex set of tasks that need to be preformed in order to simply save a picture(s) embedded in an e-mail.

I have a lot of time and biz data invested in Outlook at this point so I would like to try and stick with this platform. I'll be on stand-by and hope that a hack might be possible. Any other suggestions are also welcome. I have got to think that a great many people share my frusteration over this issue and would benefit from a simple solution?

I think that MadMaxData's suggestion to open the mail in a browser and do the "Save as..." from there is better than the one I offered, and it works like a charm.

I'll be looking to see if there's a registry hack also, but I suspect that it's a "feature" of Outlook. <sigh>

"Works like a charm" may be a an extreme oversimplification of what really happens in order to execute this maneuver in Outlook. It's an interesting angle on the problem and another way to catch a rat. But here again it's no satisfactory substitute for the total incompetence that MS's OS architects have continued to achieve with each new release. Here again we are talking about converting e-mail to HTML, squashing the contents into desperate folders, segregating the folders, opening folders, segregating and re-arranging the contents, renaming the new grouping of selected pics, downloading another piece of 3rd party software so it can recognize the imaging file types and then clicking on several pop-up windows in IrfanView to rename each and every new picture that that you are wanting to save.

All when "Save as" should have been there all along in the right click context menu. I used Outlook Express many years and had perfect bliss until forced into Win 7 + Outlook when purchasing a new laptop. They extincted Outlook Express by design because it was so simple and pure and efficient. I avoided Outlook for years when I had the choice. Now MS has removed our choices and we got over-engineered crap that even the designers cannot control their own monsters.

I have had nothing but grievances with Win 7 and it took an outside hacker to solve a major flaw that got released a week or two ago long before MS would even acknowledge there was a problem in their own forums. This is a long story pertaining to the inability to "disable the auto arrange" feature in Win 7. Basically they took away the ability to free-sort - auto arrange photos, icons etc. They stripped away all user self-organizing autonomy in all folders. Ridiculous! But a hacker found a work around about 10 days ago and shared a reg edit zip file that millions have probably downloaded by now and MS still remains dumb and silent like this was never a problem.

I'm still hoping MadMax can pull something off with this one. Its over my head but I have faith he is listening.

How about giving Thunderbird a try?
There are some addons that you could try which may help you with the issues you are having.

I suggested Gmail earlier, because I know it works seamlessly with Outlook 2007. It doesn't really matter what HTML based e-mail client you use, your going to be able to save pictures from it. This person is trying to save e-mailed pictures straight from Outlook. Therein lies the problem.

I just saw this new link you provided and will peruse this in deeper detail when I have more time to dissect it, maybe tonight. Once again however, it seems to be a fairly laborious set of tasks that could easily be accomplished with just a simple "save as" menu option, if it existed.. I'll keep tinkering, hoping and checking back here. "No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking". :sarc:

I'll be patient if you just promise not to forget about me. I'll be on stand-by to stand-by with you Max. I appreciate all of the work-around advice but I am heavily invested in using Outlook exclusively at this point. I don't have any other hopes of remedy on the horizon either so my chips are all riding on you partner! I think a successful hack will earn you a place in Heaven, not to mention about twenty million MS dissatisfied customers who would probably rake up your lawn's Fall leaves in exchange for a cute zip-file that would edit the registry and correct this glaring MS OS Outlook omission..

I've been asking and looking around, but no joy yet. Hang in there.

Edit: Only thing I've found so far that looks promising is at http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/saveembeddedpictures.htm

Second edit: The above works like a charm on Outlook 2007. Select the e-mail, click tools > macros > the macro you created. Run it, select a folder to save to, and all the pictures are saved to it.

(I didn't do the nifty stuff of making a button or signing the code, but I don't need to save many pictures, so this will do for me.)

A work around could be open the email then click the "Other Actions" button on the top ribbon, then view in browser, you can now right click and save embeded images.

The problem with doing it through the browser is that you need to save each picture individually. The OP was/is looking for a way to save multiple embedded pictures at one time.

well if your email is also web based, there is always the downthemall extension for firefox, it will downlaod all pictures on a page in one shot

This has actually gotten pretty involved. I've been doing a lot of reading on it. A registry hack can't be done as far as I know, but I might be able to script something. It's just going to take a little time for me to figure this out.
