I can only offer a workaround until you can get your scanner buttons problem sorted out. You should still be able to USE your scanner even without the scanner buttons. I have an HP scanner and the method below works very well:
Scanning with WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY
Turn on printer and connect USB cord to computer.
Be sure printer is set to 'copy' not 'scan.'
Place document in printer.
Go to Start, All Programs.
Click Windows Photo Gallery
Click 'File.' (To pre-set exact file destination, after clicking File select Options, Import, and choose the file location you want the doc sent to.)
Click 'Import From Scanner or Camera.'
Optional - Set parameters: photo or documents, feeder or flatbed, color, gray scale or b - w, type of file.
Optional -Click 'Preview' to check image, and adjust as necessary.
Click 'Import'
Click 'Scan'
When “tag” (file name) comes up in the little Scan box at the bottom-right corner of the screen, fill in the file name, and save to exact file location.
