Screen Freezes With Vertical Lines When Display Sleeps

My screen freezes when my laptop display goes into sleep mode. What is odd is that there are colored vertical lines that appear when this happens. I can not Ctrl ALt Del out, and can only do a hard reboot. I have never seen anything like this and thought that it could be a problem with my screen itself, but I would think that would happen at random times and not just when the screen sleeps. any help would be appreciated, Thank you....

I have uninstalled my driver and the ATI Catalyst Control Center and the problem stopped. When I reinstall both the driver and the CCC my computer works for about 24 hours and then the problem restarts again. Not sure what is causing this, cooling problem maybe?
