Solved Screen resolution stuck at maximum 1280x1024 for CRT monitor(s)

After a quick skim thru
I have not seen mention of the Intel graphics control panel,
intel drivers have been updated twice on your comp.
Its settings will override everything else.

note your running 8GB RAM - 32bit systems will only use 4GB
(nice rig tho - way over the top for your needs shame really)

Solved

John,

At long last I can confirm your conclusion that there is a motherboard/VGA output voltage issue, solved with your suggestion of using a PCI-e graphics card.

I asked quite a few people, but no one had a card to lend, and I kept looking for an old card to buy.

I finally managed to buy a Geforce 8500GT Asus, 512 MB, for £5, £10 with shipping.

After an automatic download of the graphics card driver and a restart, the Philips 109P worked at 1600x1200 straight away (as Recommended), and the resolution could be raised to the maximum of 1920x1440.

Now I know that I can go ahead with the second PC upgrade and have CRTs work.

Thank you very much for your tireless help, and for the cause and the cure, leading to the solution of this long standing issue.

Roy,

You are right about the RAM overkill. I had a friend build the PC, and he is used to 64 bit.

The second upgrade PC will just have 4 GB RAM, DDR4.
