Screen Saver Question

Is a Screen saver with a flat panel LCD Monintor nessecary anymore?

Also, is it better to "power off" an LCD, or let it go into "sleep" mode along with the Comptuer?

Hello dbtmellis,

No, a screen saver is not needed for a LCD or LED monitor or TV. A screen saver was meant to help prevent screen burn in for the old CRT (tube) monitors.

Personally, I think it would be best to let the LCD/LED go into sleep mode after X amount of minutes of being idle, or let them go to sleep with the computer. This way you can save some energy, and a bit off the electric bill when you are not using them.

While not necessary, there is a condition called "Image Persistence" that looks just like Burn-in from old CRT monitors. I've personally had this on one of my monitors.

Like Brink said, better bet is to just have the monitor turn off after a period of time. It also helps save the backlight in the LCD - which can grow dimmer over time.
