screen works fine in 1280x1024 but goes to sleep on 1440x900

Hi,

New to this forum and i really need help with my dual screen.

I connect my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6 notebook pc) to my monitor (HP w1707) with the ''extend these displays'' options it works fine on 1280x1024 resolution but the image looks very wide! i want to change the resolution to 1440x900 but the monitor goes to sleep and black screen once i do. What should i do?

Usually when this happens the monitor or graphics card does not support the resolution you are trying to use. Choose different resolutions until you find one that is acceptable to you.
Also, try the auto button on the monitor after setting the resolution.

I've tried that but..

I've tried lowering the resolution and the screen works but the image on the monitor looks wider then on the on my laptop. It worked in the past but after i connect it to my TV and then back to my monitor it doesn't work anymore :l

Just FYI, I looked it up, 1440 by 900 is the native res. on the HP w1707, so yes it should be working.

1280 by 1024 will not work right because your max is 900 on height. I am surprised it is offering you 1280 by 1024, but I am betting it's using a generic driver and not a specific HP w1707 driver for the external monitor.

I would look for a Windows 7 driver for the HP w1707 and update your video card driver and see if that fixes the problem, first.

Not helping that factor is it's age, that monitor is circa 2008, pre Windows 7 release date by a year at least.

It's old and may be time to replace if it refuses to play nice, I would try it on another system, if able, to confirm that it is unable to go into it's native mode and if you bought it used recently, that might be why it was being sold.
