I've used Faststone Capture for years but its printout quality is quite poor.
Anyone able to recommend better screengrab software?

I stopped using any kind of Screengrabber software years ago. It's not needed!

You already have the ability to grab a screen and copy it to the 'Clipboard' by just using the "Print Screen" key that's been on every PC keyboard for eons.

From there you can paste the image into any Photo editing tool, like Photo Shop, or my favorite, "Photo Filtre". (spelled correctly....it's French)

Once I've pasted an image into Photo Filtre, I can change size, contrast, crop, pretty much everything I could do with Photo Shop, but Photo Filtre is FREE! And much faster and easier to use than Photo Shop.
I take a lot of pictures, with my digital cameras, and every picture I save, I run through Photo Filtre first, to resize, add contrast, crop, even add text.

Good luck, Mate!

In Windows there is a snipping tool. Just go to the start orb and in the search box began typing snipping and you'll see it. Try that once and tell me what you get. If the results for you are still poor I can see about searching for something better, but in my use of the snipping tool it's been pretty decent and you can't beat free.

Also, for basic image editing I use a free program called PhotoFiltre. PhotoFiltre Studio

It sounds more like you need to check you printer settings. Check that it isn't set for Draft quality.

FastStone Capture is both a screenshot (still picture) and screen recorder (video) program. Which output has low quality for you?

BrainDamage, thanks for actually reading my question.
It's the Faststone still image quality that's poor.
For example, I can print directly from Excel to my Brother color laser and the print quality is excellent.
But if use Faststone to grab a section of an Excel screen, the printout is nowhere as sharp as the Excel print.
I deliberately framed my question as 'Anyone able to recommend better screengrab software?' because there are many of these apps, so it makes sense to first ask 'peers' if someone has had personal experience with certain software and is prepared to make a recommendation.
