Screensaver trouble.

I come bearing a rather interesting problem, today!

I have 2 different machines, both running Windows 7 Ultimate x86 with SP1, and this issue occurs on both of them. Basically, when a new screensaver is installed, it can be previewed, configured etc without an issue, but when you press Apply to set the screensaver as active, the Personalize window shows that (None) is currently active.

The problem is not just with one specific screensaver, I have tried a few different ones, by different companies (at least one of which I know works on Windows 7, as it has done in the past, on one of the machines in question!) and they all failed in this way. Strangely, older screensavers that were already installed (Windows defaults, and a few custom ones) can all be applied, and function normally.

So, if anyone has any theories about this, I'd be very interested in hearing them.

Nobody has any ideas regarding this issue? I tried a few potential fixes, none of which worked. This one really has me stumped.

I don't know how to solve your issue. Are all of the new Screen savers Win 7 compatible? I 've not tried using 3rd party ones since my XP days.
Has this always happened except for the one you say works? It is possible you'll need some sort of theme modifying program.

I will ask for help for you to see if someone knows.

The new screensavers are Windows 7 compatible, in fact, I've used one of them before on the same machine, quite some time ago. But, for one reason or another, it was removed. Upon reinstallation, it, like the rest I've tried, cannot be applied. As I mentioned before, the screensavers can be previewed without issue, so the machine is capable of playing them, which is strange.

This has not always happened, no. It seems to be that all screensavers which have been installed for a while can be applied, whereas ones that are freshly installed cannot.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums Teekz.

Are you talking about a screensaver or a wallpaper? I only ask because a lot of people seem unable to realise there is a difference between the two.

Hi. I'm most definitely talking about screensavers, and I'm installing/applying them correctly. Why they won't apply successfully is a mystery.

This is a shot in the dark, but check to see if your have Power Saving selected in your Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options. If so change it to Balanced.

This is a head-scratcher for sure.
You can try to run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html#post14392 to see if htere are corrupt sytem files. If so you can run it 3 times to see if they will be repaired.
Note: this will change any custom themes and icons back to windows defaults.

I'll take my shot in the dark. I'll use the "Flurry" screensaver as an example.

I'm wondering if maybe you have tried to install the screensaver itself into the Windows folder:

Or the un-zipped content folder:

If the latter, I'm not sure the screensaver will launch. Worth a look?
